However, Samsonova's recent improvement in form suggests that this meeting will be closely contested. Karolina Muchova Continues Strong Return In Beijing

Karolina Muchova moved into the third round after defeating Katie Boulter in straight sets in Beijing, 7-6, 6-1. She initially struggled and trailed 1-4 but quickly bounced back to finish the match in straight sets.

The Czech recently underwent minor wrist surgery after the Wimbledon final, forcing her to skip the following events in Toronto and Cincinnati. She returned at the US Open, where she reached the third round.

Last week, she played at the Billie Jean King Cup and helped her team win the title after winning both of her singles matches in Shenzhen. She is continuing that momentum this week.

The 30-year-old has posted strong results throughout the season, including six semifinal-or-better finishes. She also lifted the biggest title of her career in Doha, which helped her achieve a career-high ranking of No. 6 a few months ago.

Liudmila Samsonova Fights Back To Reach Third Round

Liudmila Samsonova moved into the third round after defeating Linda Fruhvirtova in three sets in Beijing, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. She trailed 1-3 in the decider before winning five consecutive games to seal the match in three sets.

She will be relieved with this result after suffering back-to-back opening-round exits in her last two appearances here in Beijing. She previously cleared the opening round in 2023, when she went on to reach the final.

The 27-year-old endured a difficult stretch early this year and registered multiple main-draw wins only twice during the first six months, bringing her close to dropping out of the top 70 in the rankings.

However, she has shown some resurgence in recent months, reaching the semifinals in Guadalajara, the fourth round in Toronto, the third round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals in Washington. Those results helped her return to the top 50 in the rankings.

Verdict

Both Muchova and Samsonova have reached the Beijing final in the past, setting up another competitive meeting. However, Muchova’s recent momentum from the Billie Jean King Cup gives her the edge, while Samsonova’s recent improvement should keep the contest close.
