Leylah Fernandez arrives in Tokyo in top form after a successful run to the final in Ningbo. The Canadian, now near a return to the world's top 20, faces Himeno Sakatsume, who has yet to win a main-draw match in Tokyo and is less experienced at this level. Fernandez's recent results and strong momentum make her well positioned to build on her success against Sakatsume, who seeks to overcome inconsistency and achieve her first breakthrough in the Japanese capital.

With strong momentum behind her, Fernandez looks well placed to continue her recent progress against the less experienced Sakatsume.

Fernandez Looks to Carry Ningbo Momentum Into Tokyo

Leylah Fernandez is coming off a successful campaign in Ningbo last week, where she survived three consecutive three-set matches in the early rounds and went on to reach the final before losing to Elena Rybakina in dominant straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. She will look to carry that momentum into this week.

The Canadian struggled to produce results on the surface earlier this year and recorded multiple main-draw wins only three times until August, all on clay.

However, she has shown impressive progress in recent months, reaching the fourth round in Toronto and the third round at the US Open, as well as winning the title in Singapore and reaching the final in Ningbo.

These results have brought her close to returning to the top 20 in the rankings. This is her third appearance in Tokyo. She reached the quarterfinals on her debut in 2024 and the third round last year. With her impressive momentum, she will look to achieve an even better result this time.

Sakatsume Looks to Overcome Difficult Tokyo Record

Himeno Sakatsume has been inconsistent this year, having played 26 events across all levels and failed to win a main-draw match in 15 of them, including 11 of her last 14 events.

She has recorded four quarterfinal or better results in WTA 125 events, along with main-draw wins at Indian Wells and the US Open. Despite her inconsistency, these results have helped her reach a career-high ranking of 114 recently, and she will look to improve further in the coming weeks.

This is her fourth appearance in Tokyo, but she has yet to win a main-draw match here. She lost in qualifying in 2022 and 2025 and in the first round in 2023.

Verdict

Sakatsume recently achieved a career-high ranking, but her lack of experience at this level and inconsistent results make Fernandez well placed to extend her strong recent momentum this week.
