Bartunkova has demonstrated significant progress in the past few months, notably giving Sabalenka a challenging match in Berlin earlier this year. Despite Bartunkova’s improvement, Sabalenka's experience at high-stakes matches places her as the likely victor in their upcoming encounter. The consensus is that while Bartunkova is a rising contender, Sabalenka's proven track record and composure under pressure will give her the edge.

Bartunkova Claims First Asian Tour-Level Victory

Nikola Bartunkova opened her Beijing campaign with a dominant straight-sets win over Magdalena Frech, 6-2, 6-2. She did not face a single break point and won 81% of her first-serve points during the match.

This is her first tour-level main-draw win in Asia in her career. Last year, she played in Tokyo and Chennai during the Asian swing, with both appearances ending without a win.

The Czech has posted impressive results on tour, particularly in recent months, showcasing her rising ability. Those performances have helped her move close to making her top-30 debut in the rankings, notably including a semifinal run in Monterrey and third-round appearances at Wimbledon, the US Open and Toronto.

Sabalenka Looks To Regain Lost Ranking Ground

Aryna Sabalenka started her campaign this week with a straight-sets win over Renata Zarazua, 6-1, 6-3. She fired 11 aces and did not face a single break point during the match.

She has previously cleared the opening round in three of her four main-draw appearances here in Beijing, reaching the quarterfinals on all three occasions. She will look to replicate that result this week.

The Belarusian recently lost her world No. 1 ranking after falling to Elena Rybakina in the US Open final. Despite the defeat, she took plenty of positives from that campaign, which was her only final appearance in the last six months. She will look to build on that form in Asia and regain some of the ranking points she lost.

She has played 12 events this year and registered at least two wins in 11 of those campaigns, highlighting her strong consistency. She will look to continue that run this week.
