The Contenders
Jannik Sinner
The 2024 US Open champion currently holds five Grand Slam titles, going 5-2 in finals with both defeats coming against Carlos Alcaraz.
He has shown a weakness in hot conditions, most notably at the 2026 French Open where he suffered a shock second round defeat to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo after winning the first two sets and leading 5-1 in the third set.
The Italian beat Alexander Zverev in the 2026 Wimbledon final but was forced to withdraw from the US Open due to a right knee injury.
Sinner said: "I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."

A two-time US Open champion (2022, 2025), Alcaraz was in sensational form in 2026, claiming his seventh Grand Slam title after winning the Australian Open.
The Spaniard suffered a wrist injury in Barcelona Open, missing the French Open and Wimbledon before returning to action at the US Open. He was on track to defend his title before suffering a 5 sets defeat to Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals.
Alcaraz was positive after his performance in New York: “As I said before the tournament began, my expectation was to go there, compete, play in these kinds of matches, for me being healthy."

Zverev was living in the shadow of Sinner and Alcaraz but took his chances in 2026. He captured the title at Roland Garros where Sinner went out early and Alcaraz was absent.
