Aryna Sabalenka returns to the US Open final, eyeing her third crown after an exceptional hard-court season. She boasts a remarkable 19-match US Open win streak but faces a tough challenge from Elena Rybakina, who has shown resilience and consistency against top-10 players. Rybakina seeks her third Major, leveraging her strong serve and confidence following recent wins. While both have Grand Slam pedigree, Sabalenka's recent dominance in New York makes her the slight favorite, but Rybakina's form ensures a closely contested final.

Sabalenka's New York Dominance Sends Her Back to US Open Final

Aryna Sabalenka reached the final after defeating Jessica Pegula in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. She served seven aces and saved the only break point she faced during the match.

With this run, she has become the first player, including men, in the Open Era to reach eight consecutive finals on hard courts, surpassing Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Novak Djokovic, who each reached seven in a row.

This has been an incredible turnaround for the Belarusian, who arrived in New York having performed below her usual level in recent months. She had failed to reach a final in the previous five months, including fourth-round exits at Wimbledon, Toronto and Cincinnati.

Sabalenka has now won 25 of her last 26 matches at the US Open and carries a 19-match winning streak into the final. Her only loss during the last three editions came against Coco Gauff in the 2023 final after she had taken the opening set. She won the title in the following two editions, defeating Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova.

She has a 4-4 record in Grand Slam finals and has lost three of her last four matches at this stage, including against Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open earlier this year. She now has a chance to avenge that defeat in New York.

Rybakina Eyes Third Grand Slam Crown in New York

Elena Rybakina knocked former champion Coco Gauff out after coming from a set down to reach the US Open final, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. After losing the opening set, she raised her level, won the crucial points and closed out the match without facing too much pressure.

Rybakina confirmed her World No. 1 ranking after reaching the semifinals earlier this week and is now one win away from claiming the third Grand Slam title of her career.

Her run is particularly impressive considering she suffered some early exits before the North American swing and retired during the Cincinnati quarterfinals due to injury. She had also never reached the US Open quarterfinals before this fortnight, but has turned things around in impressive fashion to reach the final.

She has played four finals on tour this year and won two of them, including her victory over Sabalenka at the Australian Open. She will now look to repeat that result in New York.

At Grand Slam level, Rybakina has a 2-1 record in finals, winning Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open earlier this year. Her only defeat came against Sabalenka at the Australian Open in 2023.

Verdict

Rybakina's serve and outstanding record against top-ranked players make this a difficult matchup for Sabalenka, but the Belarusian's incredible US Open record and recent straight-set win over Pegula make her the favorite to lift the title.
