Alexandra Eala and Jasmine Paolini are set for a highly anticipated Wimbledon fourth-round match. Paolini brings experience as a recent finalist but has struggled for consistency in 2026. Eala, meanwhile, stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek and has been on a remarkable grass-court run, boosting her world ranking and confidence. While Paolini’s experience is a key factor, Eala’s recent form, significant wins over top players, and momentum make her the favored pick to move into the quarterfinals.

Italian Finds Her Confidence

Jasmine Paolini defeated the rejuvenated Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-2 to move into the fourth round at Wimbledon. She won 84% of her first-serve points and saved both break points she faced during the match.

This is only the second time Paolini has reached the fourth round at Wimbledon. On her previous appearance in 2024, she converted the opportunity into a runner-up finish.

The Italian arrived at Wimbledon short of confidence after a disappointing run of results, having failed to win multiple matches in a tournament since March.

Her best results this season include the semifinals in Merida, the third round at the Australian Open, and the fourth round at Indian Wells. Those struggles saw her drop out of the top 10 and slip close to the edge of the top 20.

Paolini heads into this clash with a 2-3 career record in Grand Slam fourth-round matches. Her most recent appearance at this stage ended in a loss to Elina Svitolina at Roland Garros last year.

Rising Star Stuns the Champion

Alexandra Eala stunned world No. 3 and defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6, 6-2 to secure her place in the fourth round. The Filipina trailed by a break in the opening set before producing a superb comeback and dominating the remainder of the match.

With this victory, Eala became the first Asian player in the Open Era to defeat the reigning Wimbledon champion and the first left-hander to achieve the feat since Martina Navratilova in 1982.

The 21-year-old has now won 12 of her 15 grass-court matches this season, highlighted by the WTA 125 title in Birmingham and a semifinal run in Berlin.

Eala has continued her rapid rise throughout the season, winning five of her seven matches against top-10 opponents and improving every aspect of her game.

Before this fortnight, she had won only one Grand Slam main-draw match. With this run, Eala is guaranteed to achieve a new career-high ranking next week.

Verdict

Jasmine Paolini has the advantage of experience, having reached the Wimbledon final before. However, Alexandra Eala's rapid rise, outstanding grass-court form, and impressive wins over higher-ranked opponents in recent weeks make her the stronger pick to progress in this clash.
