The 2026 WTA Finals at Indian Wells begin with Aryna Sabalenka tipped to win the tournament after defending champion Elena Rybakina withdrew due to illness. Sabalenka, now the highest-ranked player in the field, previously won at Indian Wells in March and is considered the most complete contender. Home players Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are seen as her main threats, with Gauff having won the event in 2024. The tournament features eight players split into two groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

The 2026 FAGE WTA Finals begin today at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California and run until November 15. The season-ending championship was due to be played in Riyadh for a third year. It has moved to the desert instead, and the Finals are outdoors for the first time since Cancun in 2023.

The field has lost its defending champion. World No. 1 Elena Rybakina has withdrawn with a viral illness, ending a season in which she won the Australian Open, Stuttgart, the US Open and Ningbo. She had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking. Marta Kostyuk takes her place in Group 1, and Aryna Sabalenka heads the field as the highest-ranked player left.

The total prize money is $10 million, 35.5 percent less than last year. An undefeated champion can earn up to $3,370,000 and 1,500 ranking points. Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchová all make their Finals debuts.

Tournament Overview

Eight players are split into two round-robin groups of four. Each player meets the other three in her group. The top two from each group reach the semi-finals, and the group winner plays the runner-up from the other group. The two semi-final winners meet in Sunday’s final.

Group standings are decided by match wins first, then by matches played. After that come head-to-head results, then the percentage of sets and games won. Each round-robin win is worth 200 points and $230,000. The champion adds 900 points and $2,460,000 on top of her round-robin earnings.

Group 1 begins on Sunday, when Linda Noskova plays Marta Kostyuk. Group 2 starts on Monday, with Aryna Sabalenka against Karolína Muchová followed by Mirra Andreeva against Elina Svitolina. The semi-finals and final close out the week.

Recent Champions

Rybakina went through last year’s event in Riyadh without losing a match, beating Sabalenka in the final. She cannot defend the title, so a new name will lift the trophy. Three of this year’s field have won it before. Gauff took the 2024 title, Svitolina won in 2018 and Rybakina was last year’s champion. Sabalenka has reached two finals without a win.

Top 8 Seeds

Sabalenka is the top seed after Rybakina’s withdrawal. She opens Group 2 against Muchová and then meets Andreeva and Svitolina. Andreeva beat Svitolina on these courts at Indian Wells in 2025 on her way to the title. They meet again on Monday.

Group 1 has lost its biggest name but is still a tough draw. Gauff and Pegula play each other as well as Noskova and Kostyuk. All four are capable of beating anyone on a good day. The Americans have the experience, but Noskova arrives as the Wimbledon champion.

Players to Watch

Aryna Sabalenka
The world No. 2 is the player to beat. She won Indian Wells in March, beating Rybakina in the final, and she knows these courts well. She has lost two Finals championship matches, so this is her chance to win the one title missing from her collection.

Mirra Andreeva
The 19-year-old has already won Roland Garros this year. She is a debutant here, but she won the 2025 Indian Wells title and has played well in the desert. She also has a tricky opener against Svitolina.

Coco Gauff
Gauff won this event in 2024 and is playing it for a fifth year in a row. Her serve has improved and the outdoor courts should help her. She beat Rybakina in both of their 2026 meetings, so she will fancy her chances in a group without the world No. 1.

Jessica Pegula
The American reached the final in 2023 and her flat, early ball-striking suits fast hard courts. She is rarely overpowered from the baseline and tends to start well. Her opener against Gauff could set the tone for the group.

Elina Svitolina
The 2018 champion returns after several years away. She has won two titles this season and holds a 48–15 record. Her counter-punching is hard to dislodge, and she has the experience to handle a tough draw.

Verdict

Aryna Sabalenka is the pick to win the WTA Finals. With Rybakina out, she is the most complete player left, and she won at Indian Wells in March. The home players are the main threat. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula have the American crowd behind them, and Gauff won this event in 2024.
