GWS Giants vs Fremantle Dockers Preview
Fremantle will have far too much class for an out-of-sorts GWS outfit and can cover the line when the two sides meet in AFL Round 17.
The Dockers continue to go from strength to strength and are the competition’s pacesetters, coming in with a 14-1 win-loss record, while the Giants have never really got going in 2026 and are 6-9.
They continue to battle with injuries and lost a couple more of their key players in their Round 16 loss to Hawthorn.
The Giants showed plenty of fight against Hawthorn despite being hit by more injuries, but they were again exposed around stoppages and struggled to generate consistent ball movement from their back half. Those issues are unlikely to disappear against a Fremantle side that has built its season around elite pressure, defensive discipline and winning the contest for four quarters.
Fremantle continue to play one of the most complete brands in the competition. Their defensive structure has become one of their greatest strengths, while their pressure without the ball consistently forces opposition turnovers and creates repeat scoring opportunities. They have conceded just three goals in their past match and have now won 14 consecutive games by sticking to that formula.
The Giants will need to find a way to slow Fremantle's dangerous trio of key forwards while also limiting the influence of a midfield that continues to run deep. GWS have enough quality through Clayton Oliver, Finn Callaghan and Lachie Whitfield to win plenty of the football, but they have been unable to turn possession into sustained scoreboard pressure against the better sides.
Andrew Brayshaw shapes as one of the standout players in the
Round 17 contest. The Fremantle midfielder has averaged 33 disposals across his past three matches against GWS and comes off another influential performance against Gold Coast. With the Dockers expected to control territory and possession for long periods, Brayshaw should once again find plenty of the football.
While Fremantle possess the firepower to put games away, their defensive mindset suggests this shapes as a lower-scoring contest than many of their recent matches. The Dockers are conceding very little, GWS are missing important attacking personnel, and the Giants will likely look to keep the game tight. Fremantle should cover the line, while the total points under also appeals.
- Fremantle come in with a 14-1 win-loss record, while the Giants are 6-9.
- GWS have lost their past three.
- Andrew Brayshaw has averaged 33 disposals in his past three matches against GWS
- The Dockers held the Suns to just three goals last weekend.
Head to Head
Fremantle were 34-point winners the last time the two sides met, which was in Round 10 last season at ENGIE Stadium. The Dockers have won the past two between the two sides in Canberra.
Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;
- Andrew Brayshaw (Dockers)- averaging 33 disposals in his past three matches against GWS
- Caleb Serong (Dockers)- 30+ disposals in three of his past four against the Giants
- Shai Bolton (Dockers)- 2+ goals in four of his past five against GWS
- Jesse Hogan (Giants)- 12 goals in four appearances against his former side
GWS sit in 14th spot on the ladder with a 6-9 win-loss record and have lost their past three, with those defeats coming against St Kilda, Carlton and Hawthorn. They have shown some signs this season but, aside from impressive wins against Brisbane and Melbourne a month ago, they have never really clicked.
Last week’s loss to Hawthorn was by 14 points, a margin that could have been greater were it not for a spirited fightback in the second half that saw them boot eight goals to five.
The Giants rank second in the competition for disposals this season and Clayton Oliver, Finn Callaghan and Lachie Whitfield all had 30+ against the Hawks. Callaghan has had 30+ in four of his past five matches, while Oliver has had 30+ in four of his past six, reaching 28 and 29 in the other two. Toby Greene booted two goals against Hawthorn and has kicked 15 in his past five matches.
GWS Giants Team News
Brent Daniels' torrid run with injury continues, with the dynamic midfielder-forward suffering a calf injury against the Hawks. Max Gruzewski also went down with a serious knee injury and will be out of action. Jack Buckley is edging closer to a return from a hamstring injury, but Jesse Hogan, Jake Riccardi and Darcy Jones are among a number of the Giants' senior players who remain on the injury list.
Fremantle are the pacesetters of the competition, sitting on top of the ladder with a 14-1 win-loss record. Their lone loss came back in Round 1 and they will be out to make it 15 wins on the trot.
They come off a 51-point win over Gold Coast, restricting the Suns to just three goals in the 11.14 (80) to 3.11 (29) scoreline. Prior to that, they scored a nine-point win over Geelong, wearing the Cats down in the second half with eight goals to five in a margin that could have been more were it not for some inaccuracy in the 14.15 (99) to 14.6 (90) scoreline.
What makes Fremantle so dangerous is their balance across the ground. Their midfield runs deep, with Andrew Brayshaw, Caleb Serong, Hayden Young, Shai Bolton and Luke Jackson all capable of taking control at different stages of a match. The Dockers do not rely on one or two players to carry the load, allowing them to maintain pressure and intensity for four quarters.
Their forward line has become one of the competition's most potent weapons. Josh Treacy has kicked 21 goals in his past eight matches, Patrick Voss has booted 20 in his past six, while Jye Amiss has slotted 19 in his past six. The trio continue to work brilliantly together and have become extremely difficult for opposition defences to contain. With attention on them, Michael Frederick bobbed up with four goals against the Suns last weekend.
Fremantle Dockers Team News
Fremantle are in the rare position of not having a single player on their injury list and have a number of quality depth players in solid form in the WAFL, including Bailey Banfield, Mason Cox and Jaeger O'Meara. That trio may find it hard to break into the side given the Dockers' outstanding form.
