West Coast Eagles vs Richmond Tigers Preview

This is one of those games where confidence is low on both sides, but if you’re looking for a betting angle, Richmond with the start looks the way to go.

Neither side is in good shape, but West Coast’s drop-off has been stark. After showing some early-season promise, they have completely fallen away, losing their past four by big margins and coming off a 101-point demolition where their defensive pressure and structure simply didn’t hold up against St Kilda.

Richmond aren’t exactly flying at 0-7, but there are at least signs they can stay competitive for periods. They have an inability to sustain four-quarter efforts, but have been able to match it for large stretches before games blow out late.

The head-to-head leans heavily in Richmond’s favour as well. They’ve taken the past two meetings, including a comfortable win at Optus Stadium last season.

From a player prop perspective, there are a couple that stand out for the Round 8 clash. Harley Reid continues to be one of the few bright spots for the Eagles and has been finding the ball regularly even in heavy losses. He looks well placed to tick off 25+ disposals again.

On the other side, Tim Taranto is set to return and should immediately bolster Richmond’s midfield. He has been ultra-consistent in this matchup and profiles as another strong 25+ disposal play, particularly in a game that could be scrappy but still sees plenty of repeat stoppages.

Ultimately, it’s not a game that inspires much confidence, but West Coast’s current trajectory is hard to trust. Richmond are competitive enough in patches and can surprise in a match where the head to head odds do not match either side’s last month of footy.

  • Richmond took out both matches between the two sides last season, including a 49-poin win at Optus Stadium
  • The Eagles have lost their past four matches by an average of 83 points, the Tigers have lost their past four by an average of 57
  • Tim Taranto has had 25+ disposals in his past five matches against West Coast
  • Harley Reid had 27 disposals last weekend and has had 25+ in two of his past three against the Tigers

Head to Head

Richmond took out both meetings between the two sides last season, including the Round 9 fixture at the MCG by two points before a 49-point victory at Optus Stadium last season.

Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;
  • Tim Taranto (Tigers)- 25+ disposals in his past five
  • Harley Reid (Eagles)- 25+ disposals in two of his past three
  • Tom Lynch (Tigers)- 17 goals in his past five matches against the Eagles

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast have dropped off after consecutive wins earlier in the season, suffering a heavy 101-point loss to St Kilda in their most recent outing.

They managed just five goals in that match, which was the same total in their loss to Fremantle the week prior. Since their promising wins in Rounds 2 and 3, they have lost their past four by an average of 83 points, while they have averaged only 48 points in that block.

Some green shoots came from Willem Duursma (25 disposals), Harley Reid (27) and Josh Lindsey (31) in the loss to the Saints but it was a tough day for their forwards with no multiple goalkicker. Jake Waterman added one goal to his season tally and leads the Eagles goalkicking with 12 majors from seven matches.

West Coast Eagles Team News

West Coast may look to swing the axe after the disappointing display against St Kilda . Matt Owies, Tom Gross, Matt Flynn and Tom Cole are among a number with some solid form in the WAFL.

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

Richmond are struggling big time in 2026 and sit at 0-7, with an elusive win seeming well out of reach. They went close in Round 1 when going down by four points to Carlton but have since lost six straight by an average margin of 60 points. Last week it was a 54-point drubbing at the hands of Melbourne.

They have been hit hard by injuries, which is far from ideal with a young and developing list, and the pain has been felt on the scoreboard with the Tigers averaging just 60 points per game this season, the lowest of any side in the competition.

Against the Demons they were beaten soundly in hitouts, contested possession and inside 50s. Dion Prestia was solid with 28 disposals, while Jack Ross (27) and Patrick Retschko (26) found their fare share of the ball, while Mykelti Lefau and Seth Campbell both snagged two goals apiece.

Richmond Tigers Team News

Tim Taranto is set to return from concussion but the Tigers still have a number of players on the injury list, including Toby Nankervis, Maurice Rioli, Rhyan Mansell and Harry Armstrong. Luke Trainor and Tyler Sonsie had solid games at VFL level and will be considered.
