In an upcoming AFL clash, the Fremantle Dockers look poised to overpower the Western Bulldogs. The Dockers sit comfortably in second place with a 6-1 record, winning their last six matches. The Bulldogs, hit by injuries, have lost their last three games by an average of 60 points. Fremantle's adaptability and player form, notably in Shai Bolton's and Caleb Serong's performances, give them an edge. The Bulldogs' defensive issues, especially against tall forwards, present a significant challenge as they struggle with injuries and form.

Western Bulldogs vs Fremantle Dockers Preview

Fremantle look set to record a comfortable win in Friday night footy against a struggling Western Bulldogs.

The Dockers sit in second spot on the ladder with a 6–1 win-loss record and have won their past six matches, while the Bulldogs are 4–3, with all three losses coming in their past three outings — each by an average margin of 60 points.

The gap between these sides right now is significant, particularly given the Bulldogs’ injury concerns and lack of cohesion across the ground.

Fremantle’s evolution under Justin Longmuir is a major factor and they have multiple avenues to control games — whether through stoppage dominance, forward-half scoring, or defensive structure. That flexibility is crucial here, especially against a Bulldogs side that has struggled to handle pressure and momentum swings in recent weeks.

Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw continue to drive the engine room, but the emergence of players like Shai Bolton, Jordan Clark, and Murphy Reid has added another layer to the Round 8 matchup. Bolton, in particular, shapes as a game-breaker, coming off a 33-disposal, two-goal performance against Carlton where he dominated the final quarter. His ability to impact both at stoppage and inside 50 makes him a major threat.

The biggest concern for the Bulldogs is their defensive setup, particularly against tall forwards. Last week’s loss to Sydney exposed their vulnerability in the air, with Charlie Curnow dominating an undermanned backline. That issue is unlikely to improve here. Fremantle will present multiple aerial threats through Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss, and the likely returning Patrick Voss, creating matchup headaches that the Bulldogs are ill-equipped to handle.

  • Fremantle have won their past six matches
  • The Western Bulldogs have lost their past three by an average margin of 60 points
  • Shai Bolton has kicked 2+ goals in six of his past seven matches against the Bulldogs
  • Caleb Serong has had 30+ disposals in five of his past seven matches against the Bulldogs

Head To Head

Fremantle knocked the Bulldogs out of finals contention with a 15-point win in the final round last season and won both clashes in 2025. The Bulldogs have won two of their past three against the Dockers at Marvel Stadium.

Standout player performances in recent head-to-heads have come from;
  • Caleb Serong (Dockers) – 30+ disposals in five of his past seven against the Dogs, averaging 34 disposals across those matches
  • Marcus Bontempelli (Dogs) – 30+ disposals in four of his past six and five goals from his past two
  • Shai Bolton (Dockers) – 2+ goals in six of his past seven matches against the Bulldogs

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs flew out of the blocks in 2026 with four straight wins, including a couple of strong performances on the road, but injuries have taken a significant toll in recent weeks.

Their past three matches have resulted in heavy losses to Sydney, Geelong, and Hawthorn by an average margin of 60 points. The most recent of those came in a 66-point defeat to the Swans, where despite a competitive first half, they were overrun through pressure and turnover.

The Bulldogs conceded 70 inside 50s to 46 in that match and have struggled at both ends of the ground, averaging just 60 points per game while conceding 120 across their past three outings.

Marcus Bontempelli battled hard with 29 disposals and two goals against Sydney, while Bailey Dale had 31 and Adam Treloar picked up 25 in his return, but the lack of support around them has been evident.

Western Bulldogs Team News

The Bulldogs remain without key defenders Rory Lobb and James O’Donnell, leaving them exposed structurally in defence. Tim English is edging closer to a return but is unlikely to be rushed, while Aaron Naughton is in doubt following a neck injury last weekend.

Tom Liberatore will miss with concussion, while Marcus Bontempelli is also managing soreness. The ongoing injury toll continues to impact both their capacity and capability, particularly against top opposition.

Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis

Fremantle have developed into one of the most complete teams in the competition and sit at 6–1 following their 14-point win over Carlton. While the margin was relatively narrow, the Dockers controlled key phases of the game and showcased their ability to lift when required.

Shai Bolton was instrumental with 33 disposals and two goals, particularly in a dominant final quarter, while Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss combined for six goals. Luke Jackson was also outstanding, providing a dynamic presence through the ruck and around the ground.

The Dockers’ ball movement has improved significantly in 2026. They have maintained their ability to control games through territory and structure, but have added a stronger attacking edge, scoring 100+ points on four occasions this season.

Their midfield depth is a standout feature, with multiple players capable of influencing games. They have a range of ball-getters that have stepped up this season including Bolton, Jordan Clark and the young gun, Murphy Reid. That trio sit in the top five for average disposals for the Dockers, alongside Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong.

Fremantle Dockers Team News

Patrick Voss is expected to return after missing the Carlton match with illness, which will further strengthen their forward structure. Bailey Banfield is also pushing for selection after a solid return in the WAFL.
