2025 Coral Gold Cup Tips - Early 20/1 selection for Newbury's big handicap

The Coral Gold Cup is set for an exciting race on November 29th at Newbury, with The Doyen Chief emerging as a promising contender. Trainer Alan King has earmarked this race for his eight-year-old horse, which has shown substantial growth over fences. Despite a near-miss in a recent race, the strategically placed entry at the bottom of the weights for the Coral Gold Cup positions The Doyen Chief well for potential victory. The horse's adaptation to longer distances and softer ground might give it the edge needed for success.

Here's an early selection for the Coral Gold Cup, which takes place at Newbury on November, 29th.

The Coral Gold Cup is one of my favourite races of the National Hunt season, and this year's renewal is shaping up to be a cracker. Today, I've taken a look through the ante-post betting, and picked out a strong contender who looks to be overpriced.

2025 Coral Gold Cup Ante-Post Tip - The Doyen Chief

Alan King will have a love/hate relationship with the Coral Gold Cup. King saddled Smad Place before his success a decade ago, and watched Dingo Dollar place twice in the contest. His most recent runners, however, have all failed to fire - including Potterman, who was twice pulled up in this race before suffering a fatal injury on his third crack in 2022.

King hasn't had a runner in this lucrative handicap since then, but seems to have earmarked the contest for THE DOYEN CHIEF (20/1). Having shown a decent level of ability over hurdles, King's eight-year-old improved greatly for fences last term, ending his novice campaign with two Class 2 victories.

The Doyen Chief thrashed a decent field at Kempton in March, and followed up at Warwick 12 days later. Tom Cannon's mount didn't jump as fluently as he had done at Kempton, but stayed strong in the closing stages to repel two classy runners for Dan Skelton - who had his horses fit and firing, as he attempted to fend off Willie Mullins in the trainer's championship.

King's eight-year-old travelled beautifully throughout his reappearance at Bangor. The Doyen Chief made a slight error at the fourth-last, but cantered into the lead approaching the final flight - only to make another blunder, which resulted in Tom Bellamy losing an iron, and allowed chasing debutante Deep Cave to claim a narrow win.

Despite failing to claim victory that day, King will have been delighted with that reappearance effort, and defeat ensured The Doyen Chief would enter the Coral Gold Cup at the bottom of the weights. There's every chance that this strong traveller will improve again for this step up to three-and-a-quarter miles, and softer ground at Newbury will only help his cause.

Verdict

The Doyen Chief is our ante-post selection for the 2025 Coral Gold Cup.
