The 2026 Dante Stakes, a critical trial for the Epsom Derby, brings a strong field to York. Top contenders include Christmas Day, Morshdi, and King's Trail, but the standout value tip is Wise Prince. Despite limited experience, Wise Prince has shown considerable promise and improvement, making him a strong selection, especially with favorable ground conditions. Bettors are encouraged to consider Wise Prince at 11/1 for potential value. Check out our betting tips and live stream options for full race coverage and the latest insights.

What many consider to be the most important trial for the Epsom Derby will be run at York on Thursday, as a field of Epsom hopefuls take part in the historic Dante Stakes. This 10-furlong Group Two has been won by plenty of future Derby winners down the years and this year's renewal promises to be a cracker.

Here's our free guide to the 2026 Dante Stakes, including our best betting tips.

Aidan O'Brien has been dominant in the Epsom trials over the past couple of weeks, and he'll be represented at York by Christmas Day. Ryan Moore's mount ended his juvenile season with a pair of victories, and returned to action with an impressive win in the Ballysax Stakes.

Feilden Stakes winner Morshdi came out of the Dee Stakes last week, and he'll head to York instead. Colin Keane rides Item for Andrew Balding, who'll attempt to maintain his unbeaten record on his seasonal reappearance.

Charlie Appleby's Al Zanati will try to go one better after his runner-up finish to Raaheeb in the Classic Trial at Sandown. William Buick, however, has opted to ride King's Trail, who'll step up in trip following a ninth-place finish in the 2000 Guineas.

Aidan O'Brien's second string Action could only finish fourth at Sandown, despite going off at 4/6. Wise Prince finished a place behind Al Zanati at Sandown, and also features in the York entries. John and Thady Gosden also run Guildmaster, who'll be partnered by James Doyle, leaving Rab Havlin to reprise his partnership with Wise Prince.

2026 Dante Stakes Tips

The one who interests me most in this year's Dante is WISE PRINCE (11/1), who remains open to any amount of improvement after just two career starts.

John and Thady Gosden's colt had his sole juvenile start over a mile at Nottingham in October. Rab Havlin's mount was keen early on, but tanked his way to the front with two furlongs to travel before stretching four lengths clear of the chasing pack without ever really extending himself.

Wise Prince was then thrown into the Classic Trial at Sandown on his reappearance. Raaheeb dominated that contest from the front, winning impressively from Al Zanati. Havlin's mount travelled strongly again, and looked to be winding himself up to challenge, only to run out of steam and hit the line a little one-paced back in third.

This son of Ghaiyyath seemed to relish a little extra cut in the ground at Nottingham in October, so the weather forecast will fill team Gosden with confidence. Wise Prince is a strapping colt, who will surely have improved fitness-wise for that first run of the season at Sandown. At 11/1, I think he's overpriced.
