The Shanghai Masters is the only ATP Masters 1000 event held in Asia, with the tournament played on outdoor hard courts at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

Established in 2009, the event has become a key part of the ATP's autumn Asian swing. It was absent from the calendar between 2020 and 2022 before returning in 2023.

Novak Djokovic is the tournament's most successful player, with four Shanghai titles. The Serbian will be among the biggest names in the 2026 field alongside Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz.

Valentin Vacherot returns as defending champion after winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Shanghai last year. The 2026 draw also features Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Arthur Fils and a strong group of contenders looking to challenge for the title.

Tournament Overview

Played on outdoor hard courts, The 2026 Shanghai Masters runs from October 7 to 18, with qualifying taking place on October 5 and 6. The main draw begins on October 7, while the singles and doubles finals are scheduled for October 18. ATP Tour is one of the biggest events of the Asian swing and features a 96-player singles draw.

The winner will also take home $1,151,380, with prize money increasing significantly from the quarterfinal stage onwards.

Playing Conditions & Court Speed

Shanghai's outdoor hard courts generally offer a medium-fast playing environment, giving an advantage to players who can take the ball early and dictate from the baseline.

The conditions can also reward effective serving and aggressive returning. Players who protect their service games while applying pressure on second serves should have opportunities to keep points short.

October conditions in Shanghai can bring mild to warm temperatures and humidity, while wind can occasionally become a factor on the outdoor courts.

For bettors, surface-specific form is particularly useful here. Players with a strong record on outdoor hard courts and the ability to transition quickly from defence to attack should be given extra consideration.

Factor Impact
Surface Type Outdoor Hard
Court Speed Medium-Fast
Bounce Medium
Weather Mild to warm, with humidity and occasional wind

Recent Champions

Since returning in 2023, the event has produced three different champions. Hubert Hurkacz won in 2023, Jannik Sinner claimed the 2024 title by beating Djokovic, and Valentin Vacherot stunned the field in 2025 to win his first Masters 1000 title.

Top 8 Seeds

The Shanghai draw has Alexander Zverev as the No. 1 seed, with Carlos Alcaraz placed second. Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev round out the top five, while Flavio Cobolli, Frances Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur complete the leading seeds.

Players to Watch

Alexander Zverev
The top seed in Shanghai, Zverev is a former runner-up with an excellent record at Masters 1000 level. However, his recent results outside the Grand Slams have been inconsistent, and his disappointing Beijing campaign leaves him with plenty to prove.

Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz arrives after reaching the Tokyo final, but the demanding schedule comes early in his comeback. Managing his fitness while adjusting to another Masters 1000 event will be a major challenge.

Novak Djokovic
Djokovic has returned to strong form during the Asian swing, reaching the Beijing final before heading to Shanghai. His biggest question mark will be whether his body can handle another demanding tournament so soon after Beijing.

Valentin Vacherot
Vacherot produced one of the most remarkable Masters 1000 runs last year, coming through qualifying before lifting the Shanghai title. As the defending champion, he now faces the pressure of backing up that extraordinary performance.

Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev has looked sharp during the Asian swing, but his Beijing semifinal ended in a controversial default after he hit a ball into the crowd. He will need to put that incident behind him quickly and regain his focus in Shanghai.

Verdict

Zverev and Medvedev are our two picks for the Shanghai Masters title. Zverev has the draw and experience to make a deep run, while Medvedev arrives in strong form and has already shown his level during the Asian swing.

Vacherot is an interesting long-shot option. The defending champion faces a much tougher challenge this time around, but his proven ability to produce big wins in Shanghai makes him worth considering at a bigger price.
