Rybakina Eyes Strong Finish After Reaching World No. 1

Elena Rybakina began her title defence in Ningbo with a retirement victory over Polina Kudermetova, who withdrew after falling 0-5 behind. The result secured Rybakina's place in the quarterfinals and gave her first win of the Asian swing this year.

The Kazakh recently captured the third Grand Slam title of her career at the US Open, a triumph that also helped her reach world No. 1 for the first time. She will now look to carry that momentum into Ningbo and add another title to her collection.

Rybakina also endured an early exit in Beijing last year before finishing the season with an 11-match winning streak. She won titles in Ningbo and at the WTA Finals, alongside a semifinal appearance in Tokyo, and will hope to reproduce that strong finish this season.

She has reached 11 tour-level quarterfinals this year, winning six of them. Four of her five quarterfinal defeats have come against top-20 opponents, highlighting the quality of the players who have stopped her progress.

Kawa Delivers Biggest Win Of Her Career In Ningbo

Katarzyna Kawa pulled off a major upset by defeating world No. 14 Belinda Bencic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals in Ningbo. Despite losing her lead twice in the opening set, she stepped up at key moments to take the set and carry that momentum into the second.

The Pole has now recorded four consecutive wins this week, having previously defeated Daria Snigur twice and Katie Volynets. This run also marks her first time recording back-to-back main-draw wins at any level since June.

This is also her first tour-level quarterfinal on hard courts, having previously reached this stage four times, all on clay. She holds a 2-2 record in those matches.

She has played five quarterfinals across all levels this year, winning four of them. All four victories came at WTA 125 events, while her only defeat at this stage came against Panna Udvardy in Bogota.
