Elena Rybakina is tipped to defeat Yulia Putintseva in their WTA Tokyo encounter. Rybakina arrives with strong momentum, having defended her Ningbo title and achieved the world No. 1 ranking. She has excelled on hard courts this season, winning four titles and maintaining a 22-5 record against players ranked outside the top 50. In contrast, Putintseva has struggled for consistency, recording multiple main-draw wins at only two events this year and enduring an eight-match losing streak against top-10 opponents. The head-to-head stands at 2-2, but Rybakina's recent form gives her the edge.

Rybakina Carries Title-Winning Momentum Into Tokyo

Elena Rybakina began the Asian swing with a disappointing opening-round loss in Beijing but bounced back by defending her title in Ningbo last week. She defeated Diana Shnaider and Leylah Fernandez in the later rounds to secure her fourth title of the year, the most she has won in a single season in her career.

The Kazakh suffered an ankle injury in Cincinnati but returned to form by winning the US Open, which propelled her to the top of the rankings for the first time in her career.

She has played 11 hard-court events this year and reached at least the quarterfinals in eight of them, including title-winning campaigns at the Australian Open and US Open, as well as final appearances in Indian Wells and Toronto. She will now look to extend her success on the surface this week.

This is Rybakina's third appearance in Tokyo. She lost in the first round on her debut in 2022 but reached the semifinals last year before giving Linda Noskova a walkover.

Putintseva Looks to Rediscover Consistency After Difficult Season

Yulia Putintseva upset Maria Sakkari in three sets to reach the second round in Tokyo, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. This was her second three-set victory of the week after defeating Sayaka Ishii in the final qualifying round.

The 31-year-old has played 21 events this year but recorded multiple main-draw wins at only two of them. Her best results include reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Iasi, highlighting her struggles to maintain consistency in recent months.

She is now seeking her first tour-level hardcourt quarterfinal since Jiujiang last year and will aim to achieve her best result in Tokyo, having exited in or before the second round on both previous appearances.
