Mertens Stuns Gauff To Reach Beijing Quarterfinal

Elise Mertens defeated world No. 4 Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Beijing, winning 6-3, 6-3. This was a much more comfortable win for her after playing back-to-back three-set matches against Katie Volynets and Jelena Ostapenko earlier this fortnight.

This is a breakthrough result for her in Beijing and her first quarterfinal at a WTA 1000-level event since 2021. She had previously made six appearances here but never won consecutive main-draw matches in any of them, winning only three matches combined. She has now equalled that total this week.

The Belgian has been strong in early-round matches this year but has struggled to turn those results into deep runs at most events. However, she has shown progress in that area in recent months by reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, the final in Monterrey and now the quarterfinals in Beijing.

These results have pushed her close to returning to the top 15 in the rankings. She heads into this clash with a 2-4 record in WTA 1000-level quarterfinals, with her most recent success at this stage coming in Dubai in 2021, when she went on to reach the semifinals.

Swiatek Returns To The Beijing Quarterfinals

After playing a tough three-set match against Donna Vekic, Iga Swiatek defeated rising youngster Iva Jovic comfortably in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Beijing, winning 6-1, 6-3. She lost her serve once and broke her opponent five times during the match.

This is her second quarterfinal appearance here in Beijing. On her debut in 2023, she reached this stage and defeated Caroline Garcia in a comeback three-set match before going on to lift the title. She will now look to repeat that success.

The Pole struggled to produce deep results early this year and lost significant ranking points, but she has shown encouraging progress since the start of the North American swing by winning the title in Toronto, reaching the semifinals in Cincinnati and making the fourth round at the US Open.

She has a 3-4 record in tour-level quarterfinals this year. She lost her first four matches at this stage but has won her last three and will look to improve that record further this week.

Mertens has made encouraging progress in recent months, but Swiatek’s proven record at this level and past success in Beijing give her a clear advantage. The Pole should have enough quality to advance to the semifinals.
