Janice Tjen is tipped to defeat Robin Montgomery in the Chennai WTA semifinal, based on Tjen's perfect 2-0 record in tour-level semifinals and her status as the defending champion after winning her maiden title in Chennai last year. Tjen’s strong serving performance in her quarterfinal and her experience at this stage give her the edge, despite both players experiencing inconsistent seasons. Montgomery, who recently ended a poor run with a straight-sets win, holds a 1-1 record in semifinals. This will be their first career meeting.

Tjen Seeks to Defend Chennai Crown After Three-Set Fightback

Janice Tjen fought back from a set down to defeat Polina Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and reach the semifinals in Chennai. She served 13 aces and won 79% of her first-serve points during the match.

The Indonesian is now one victory away from reaching her second consecutive final in Chennai after claiming her maiden tour-level title at the tournament last year.

Tjen arrived this week short of confidence and match rhythm, having registered multiple main-draw wins in only two of the 29 events she had played. That inconsistent run recently pushed her outside the top 70 in the rankings.

This is the third tour-level semifinal of her career, and she has converted both previous appearances into final runs, finishing runner-up in Sao Paulo and winning the title in Chennai in 2025. She will now look to maintain that perfect record.

Montgomery Rediscovers Winning Touch to Reach Chennai Semifinal

Robin Montgomery secured her place in the semifinals after defeating local youngster Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. She initially trailed by a break in the opening set but quickly recovered to regain control and complete a comfortable victory.

This marks an impressive resurgence for the American, who had failed to win a main-draw match in six consecutive events before arriving in Chennai.

Montgomery returned in April this year after a nine-month injury layoff. She played 14 events before this week, with 11 of them ending without a main-draw victory and notably winning her maiden tour-level title in 's-Hertogenbosch after receiving a walkover from Barbora Krejcikova in the final, as well as a WTA 125 title in Oeiras.

She has a 1-1 career record in tour-level semifinals, with her previous appearance at this stage ending in defeat in Auckland last year. She will now look to reach another final in Chennai.
