Ostapenko Opens Wuhan Campaign With Dominant Victory

Jelena Ostapenko defeated Daria Kasatkina in dominant fashion to reach the second round in Wuhan, winning 6-1, 6-1. Although she lost her serve twice, the Latvian won all seven return games during the match.

Ostapenko endured a disappointing North American swing, playing three tournaments without recording a win. She subsequently registered encouraging victories in Seoul and Beijing but failed to build on that momentum.

The Latvian has played 20 events this year and recorded multiple main-draw wins in only five of them. Her most recent such run came at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round. She will now aim to build on her commanding Wuhan opener and produce a stronger finish to the season.

Pegula Looks to Defend Runner-Up Points in Wuhan

Jessica Pegula is set to play her first tournament since reaching the semifinals at the US Open. After a demanding schedule and several deep runs in recent months, the American decided to skip a couple of tournaments, including Beijing.

Pegula has been one of the most consistent players on tour this year. She has competed in 15 events and, apart from a couple of early exits on clay, won at least two matches in 13 tournaments. These results include 12 quarterfinal-or-better finishes.

The American will now look to maintain that consistency and finish the season strongly. This is her fourth main-draw appearance in Wuhan, where she will aim to defend the runner-up points she earned last year.

Verdict

Ostapenko impressed in her opening-round win, but her inconsistent season makes Pegula the stronger contender. Still, Ostapenko's recent wins in Asia could make this a competitive match.
