Laver Cup History
The Laver Cup was created in 2017 and is named after Australian tennis great Rod Laver, the only man to complete the calendar-year Grand Slam twice. The tournament was developed by Roger Federer’s management company TEAM8, Brazilian businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia, with the idea of creating a team event in tennis similar to golf’s Ryder Cup. The inaugural edition was held in Prague, with Team Europe winning the first title.
The competition has been held annually since 2017, apart from 2020, when it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Former rivals Björn Borg and John McEnroe served as the captains of Team Europe and Team World respectively during the tournament's first four editions, helping establish the event's team-based identity.
Laver Cup 2026 Format and Rules
The Laver Cup uses a team format that is different from a standard ATP tournament. Team Europe and Team World each have six players, with 12 matches played across three days. There are nine singles matches and three doubles matches, with players subject to participation limits to ensure the entire squad is involved during the weekend.
- Each player can play singles no more than twice.
- At least four players from each team must play doubles.
- Each player must play at least one singles match during the first two days.
- All matches are played as best-of-three sets.
- If the score reaches one set apiece, a 10-point match tiebreak is played instead of a third set.
- Players can receive courtside coaching from their teammates and captain, something rarely seen in regular ATP competition.
- If both teams reach 12 points, a final one-set match known as The Decider determines the champion.

The Laver Cup uses a 24-point scoring system, with the value of each match increasing as the weekend progresses. Every match counts towards the team total, making the final day particularly important. The first team to reach 13 points wins the Laver Cup.
