Fernandez Seeks Third Asian Final of the Season

Leylah Fernandez advanced to the semifinals after her opponent, Elena Rybakina, retired due to injury. She had previously defeated Himeno Sakatsume and Elise Mertens in back-to-back straight-sets matches earlier this week.

This is Fernandez’s best result in Tokyo, as both of her previous appearances at the tournament ended in the quarterfinals or earlier.

A few months ago, she dropped outside the top 30 in the rankings after struggling to replicate her previous year's results, including failing to defend her title in Washington.

However, her recent resurgence, highlighted by a title in Singapore, a final appearance in Ningbo and third-round runs at the US Open and Wuhan, has brought her close to returning to the top 20.

Fernandez heads into this match with a 10-3 record in tour-level semifinals, including a 4-3 record in Asia. She is now seeking her third final in the region this year.

Rakhimova Looks to End Semifinal Losing Streak in Tokyo

Kamilla Rakhimova defeated Maya Joint in three sets to secure her place in the semifinals, winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. She lost her serve three times but broke her opponent six times during the match.

Rakhimova lost in the final qualifying round earlier this week but received a lucky-loser opportunity along with a first-round bye. She has made the most of that chance, including defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets in the opening round.

She had not won multiple main-draw matches at any level during the first seven months of the season, but third-round appearances in Toronto, at the US Open and in Beijing helped turn her season around.

Rakhimova has a 0-4 record in tour-level semifinals, with all four defeats coming on surfaces other than hard courts. She will be looking to reach her maiden tour-level final this week.
