Leylah Fernandez advanced to the fourth round in Toronto after stunning world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva, providing a much-needed boost in confidence. She now faces Naomi Osaka, who has displayed impressive form defeating Elise Mertens. While the head-to-head is tied at 1-1, Osaka has proven more consistent and holds a superior record against non-top-20 opposition. Despite Fernandez's momentum, Osaka, riding strong results this season, is favored to break her WTA 1000 last-16 losing streak and reach the quarterfinals.

Fernandez Stuns Andreeva to Reach the Fourth Round

Leylah Fernandez defeated the world No. 5 and recent French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in straight sets to reach the fourth round in Toronto, 6-1, 6-4. She lost her serve once and converted four of the five break points she created during the match.

This is only the second time Fernandez has won multiple matches at the Canadian Open in her career. She previously reached the round of 16 in Montreal, where she lost in straight sets, and is now looking for her best result at the tournament.

This is a much-needed confidence-boosting run for the Canadian, who arrived this week without winning multiple matches on hard courts this year and had lost seven of her previous nine matches on tour.

She recently failed to defend her title in Washington and will be looking for a deep run this week to make up for some of those lost ranking points.

Osaka Builds on Dominant Toronto Run

Naomi Osaka continued her strong campaign with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Elise Mertens to reach the fourth round. She saved all three break points she faced and converted four of the eight opportunities she created.

This is her fourth round-of-16 appearance at the Canadian Open, and she has converted two of her previous three into deeper runs, reaching the final in Montreal in 2025 and the quarterfinals in Toronto in 2019.

Despite dealing with injury issues earlier this year, Osaka has produced solid results, including a final in Bad Homburg and a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon.

She has already played three round-of-16 matches at WTA 1000 events this season, but all three ended in defeat. She will now be looking to end that streak and reach the quarterfinals this week.
