Samsonova Builds on Recent Momentum

Liudmila Samsonova came through a tough straight-sets battle against Janice Tjen in the opening round, winning 7-6, 7-5. She trailed 1-4 in the first set and saved three set points in the tiebreak before claiming the opener, a turning point that proved crucial to her victory. 

Until a few weeks ago, the Russian endured a difficult stretch, winning only four matches across 13 tournaments between Doha and Bad Homburg. However, she has shown encouraging signs recently by reaching the third round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals in Washington.

Krejcikova Continues Her Return to Form

Barbora Krejcikova is coming off a disappointing semifinal defeat to the inexperienced Lilli Tagger at her home tournament in Prague, a result that followed her title-winning run in Athens. 

The Czech struggled with injury problems earlier in the season, and after returning in May she needed time to regain her rhythm. Since then, she has steadily rebuilt her form, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon, the final in 's-Hertogenbosch, and lifting the WTA 125 title in Parma. 

Krejcikova has played the Canadian Open five times before, but every campaign has ended either in the qualifying stages or the first round. Arriving with renewed confidence, she will be looking to finally make an impact in Toronto.
