Brandon Nakashima and Luciano Darderi meet at ATP Montreal in a clash where Nakashima holds the edge, especially on hard courts. While Darderi excels on clay, his record vs Top 50 hard court players is poor (4-14). Nakashima has flourished under new coach Wayne Ferreira, going 6-1 and looking strong with recent top wins. Our expert prediction: Nakashima to win and continue his momentum, with betting odds favoring the American at 1.40.

Darderi Comfortable on Clay

Luciano Darderi won four clay court titles last year and lost the Buenos Aires final in February. He claimed the title in Santiago before a semi-final exit in Rome.

The Italian climbed to a career high World No.16 as a result and went close to winning another title in Bastad, losing the final to Andrey Rublev. He began the hard court swing in Los Cabos and lasted just three games, retiring in his opening match.

The 24-year-old hasn’t faced a Top 50 player in Montreal, leading 6-4 2-3 when Gabriel Diallo retired before coming back to beat Juncheng Shang 4-6 6-1 6-4 and Nuno Borges 4-6 6-3 7-5.

Ferreira in Nakashima's Corner

Brandon Nakashima lost the Brisbane final and reached the semi-finals in Acapulco but was unable to replicate that form on clay. He improved on grass, getting to the Queen's Club semi-finals before a second round exit at Wimbledon.

The 25-year-old went on a great run in Washington last week, beating Jakub Mensik and Alex de Minaur on his way to the semi-finals where he lost in 3 sets to Taylor Fritz.

The American spoke about the impact of new coach Wayne Ferreira. “This is the first week we have spent together. It's been working out pretty well. He's a great guy, had an amazing career. It's nice to have his experience and his expertise in the corner.”

Nakashima has continued winning in Montreal, defeating Daniel Altmaier 6-2 6-1 and Titouan Droguet 4-6 6-2 7-5. He got past Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 5-7 7-5 in the fourth round, saving 2/5 break points.
