Sherif Carries Iasi Success into Hamburg

After surviving a tough opening-round battle against Simona Waltert, Mayar Sherif comfortably defeated Elsa Jacquemot in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals in Hamburg. She dropped her serve twice and broke her opponent five times during the match.

With this run, Sherif has extended her clay-court winning streak to 17 matches across all levels. The streak includes WTA 125 titles in Brescia and Contrexeville, followed by her first WTA Tour title in four years in Iasi last week.

Before this winning run, Sherif had dropped outside the top 120 in the rankings and had recorded only two WTA Tour main-draw wins over the previous two seasons. She is now one win away from returning to the top 50.

Sherif holds a 6-2 career record in WTA Tour quarterfinals and is currently on a four-match winning streak at this stage.

Badosa Targets Revenge Against Sherif

Paula Badosa reached the quarterfinals after defeating Panna Udvardy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. She was a little shaky on serve early in the match but regained control as it progressed.

Until May, the Spaniard struggled for consistency, registering multiple main-draw wins at only one tournament and failing to reach a tour-level quarterfinal since Berlin in 2025. That run left her close to dropping out of the top 150.

However, since the grass-court season, Badosa has rediscovered her form. She reached the quarterfinals in Berlin before winning the WTA 125 title in Bastad and finishing runner-up in Iasi. This quarterfinal run has now moved her close to a return to the top 80 in the rankings.

Badosa has a 7-7 career record in WTA Tour clay-court quarterfinals. Before reaching the final in Iasi last week, she had been on a four-match losing streak at this stage.

Sherif defeated Badosa in the Iasi final last week after the Spaniard retired while trailing by a set and 0-4. With her form continuing to improve, Badosa will fancy her chances of avenging that defeat and securing a place in the semifinals.
