Zheng Returns to the Top 30 With Beijing Breakthrough
Qinwen Zheng secured her place in the final after defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. She won 88% of her first-serve points and lost her serve just once during the match.
With this victory, Zheng became the first Chinese player to reach the final at the China Open. She also became the first wildcard and the lowest-ranked player to reach the final here.
The 24-year-old has struggled to produce her best tennis since returning from injury, which pushed her outside the top 150 a few months ago.
However, she has recently rediscovered her form, reaching the quarterfinals at the US Open and in Athens before advancing to the final in Beijing. Her resurgence has also secured her return to the top 30 next week.
This is Zheng's first final since 2024, and she enters the match with a 5-5 record in tour-level finals. She has reached the final of a WTA 1000 event only once before, at the Wuhan Open in China in 2024, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. Zheng will now aim for a better result on home soil.

Andreeva Reaches Beijing Final as Historic Season Continues
Mirra Andreeva defeated rising Czech youngster Nikola Bartunkova in comfortable straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the final in Beijing. She lost her serve just once and broke her opponent five times during the match.
With this run, Andreeva has become the youngest player to record 50 or more wins in a season since Caroline Wozniacki achieved the feat in 2009.
The Russian has enjoyed an incredible season. Although she failed to defend either of her WTA 1000 titles early in the year, she bounced back with a 22-3 record during the clay-court season, including her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. She also reached the quarterfinals at the US Open recently.
Her run in Beijing has now secured her debut in the top three of the world rankings. This is also Andreeva's fifth tour-level final of the year. She has won three of her previous four finals, with her only defeat coming against Marta Kostyuk in Madrid.
