Kartal Defies The Odds To Reach Wuhan Last Four
Sonay Kartal defeated world No. 6 Elina Svitolina in three sets to reach the first WTA 1000 semifinal of her career, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. It was also the second top-10 victory of her career.
With this win, Kartal became the third lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal since the format was introduced in 2009. She also became the first British woman to reach the semifinals in Wuhan.
The 24-year-old recently returned from a six-month injury layoff, but despite her lack of match practice and momentum, she has won six of her last seven matches, including a run to the third round in Beijing last week. Her impressive results have also taken her back into the top 100 in the rankings.
This is only Kartal’s second tour-level semifinal. Two years ago, she reached the semifinals in Monastir and went on to win the title. She will now look to repeat that achievement in Wuhan.

Ostapenko Finds Her Rhythm After An Inconsistent Stretch
