Zverev Close to Second Grand Slam
Alexander Zverev has been in the shadow of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz but took advantage of their absence to win the French Open.
The German reached the Wimbledon final, winning the first set against Sinner before going down in 4 sets.
The 29-year-old came to the US Open in poor form and it continued in New York, getting past Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys in 5 sets. He has picked it up since, easing past Alejandro Tabilo and defeated Luciano Darderi in straight sets.
Zverev gave Botic van de Zandschulp little chance in the quarter-finals, coming through 6-2 7-5 6-1 after winning 44% of his 2nd serves and saving two break points.
He spoke about the need to keep looking forward: "The more often that you get to that stage, the more normal it becomes, which is something that you should never take for granted."
"I think it's a very special feeling when it becomes a normal thing. I don't take it for granted at all... I'm happy with how things are going, but looking forward, I still hope to play two good matches in New York."
Khachanov Bouncing Back
Karen Khachanov dropped out of the Top 20 before Wimbledon and lost three straight matches on his return to hard courts. He came to the US Open as World No.50.
The Russian is playing well in New York, thrashing Roman Andres Burruchaga 6-3 6-0 6-1 and coming back to beat Felix Auger Aliassime 6-7 6-3 6-2 6-2.
The 30-year-old eased past Benjamin Bonzi 6-3 6-2 6-4 and did it the hard way against Learner Tien, coming through 7-5 4-6 6-7 6-1 6-4 after winning 44% of his 2nd serves and saving 9/14 break points.
Khachanov met an injured Alexander in the quarter-finals and was hardly tested, leading 6-2 7-5 3-2 when Blockx retired.
He commented on facing an injured opponent: "It was not easy, as from one side I felt like I was dominating from the beginning and then I felt he was struggling more and more and it is a mixed feeling."
"He is suffering and I don't want to scream, 'Come on', but I wanted to keep the energy there. I wish him a speedy recovery. I saw that he was suffering all over his body."
