Alexander Zverev was pushed all the way in the first round and hasn’t done it easy in two matches against Quentin Halys. I am backing the top seed to come through in 4 sets.

Zverev Below His Best

Alexander Zverev had a consistent start to the year, continually beaten by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the latter stages of tournaments.

The German took advantage of their absence at the French Open, winning the title without facing a Top 10 player. He got to the Wimbledon final, winning the first set against Sinner before going down in 4 sets.

The 29-year-old suffered early exits in Montreal, Cincinnati, and that form continued at the US Open. He came back to beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 in the first round, hitting 61 winners and 39 unforced errors.

Zverev was positive after the victory in New York: "I think there's definitely room for improvement. I think tonight, funny enough, I think I missed a few more backhands than I usually do. That's something that doesn't happen very often."

"But definitely something that I can adjust a little bit and hopefully moving forward it will be better. Overall, I think it was a great, tough battle, and I think it was a match that I needed after the last couple of weeks."

Halys a Tie Break Specialist

Quentin Halys dropped out of the Top 100 on two occasions this year, getting back into form in Kitzbuhel. He won his first ATP Tour title without losing a set, taking out Alexander Bublik in the final.

The Frenchman got through the qualifiers in Cincinnati, running into Alex de Minaur in the second round and going down in 3 sets. He lost another 3 set clash to Benjamin Bonzi in the Winston Salem first round.

Halys overcame Facundo Diaz Acosta 6-4 7-5 6-7 6-1 in the US Open first round, winning 48% of his 2nd serves and saving 5/7 break points. He has now seen a tie break in his last eight matches.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev v Quentin Halys

Quentin Halys lost 7-6 7-6 to Alexander Zverev in Miami which suggests a first set tie break is a chance once again. The Frenchman is capable of winning a set, but Zverev should be too good in New York.
