Jessica Pegula enters the US Open third round riding strong momentum, having dominated on North American hard courts and winning her last four matches at this stage. Opponent Leylah Fernandez matches last year’s run but has had hard-court struggles throughout the season, with her best 2026 results coming on clay. Pegula’s 3-0 head-to-head lead, superior ranking, and consistent performance make her the favorite. The analysis suggests Pegula is likely to progress to the fourth round, continuing her impressive streak in New York.

Fernandez has made an encouraging start to the tournament, but her struggles for consistency on hard courts this season present a major challenge against an in-form Pegula.

Jessica Pegula Continues Her Dominant Start in New York

Jessica Pegula defeated Sofia Kenin in comfortable straight sets to reach the third round of the US Open, winning 6-3, 6-1. She won an impressive 86 percent of points behind her first serve and did not face a single break point throughout the match.

This marks her seventh consecutive third-round appearance at the US Open. She has won four of her previous six matches at this stage, including each of her last four.

The American continues to bring incredible consistency into New York, having reached the finals in Washington and Cincinnati and the fourth round in Toronto during the lead-up events. She will look to maintain that strong momentum this week.

Pegula has played five events on North American hard courts this year and reached at least the quarterfinals in four of them, with Toronto the only exception, highlighting her strong record in this region.

Fernandez Matches Last Year's US Open Run

Leylah Fernandez defeated Shuai Zhang and Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets to reach the third round at the US Open. She has not lost more than four games in any of the four sets she has played this week.

This is only the second time she has won multiple matches on hard courts this year across 12 events, highlighting her struggles for consistency on the surface. With this run, she has matched her result from last year's US Open.

Fernandez has reached three quarterfinals on tour this year, all of which came on clay courts in Strasbourg, Madrid and Stuttgart. Those results have helped her remain inside the Top 40 despite her significant struggles on hard courts.

Verdict

Fernandez has gained some much-needed confidence from her recent victories, but her inconsistent form and struggles on hard courts this season make it difficult to see her seriously challenging an in-form Pegula.
