Pegula Continues to Deliver in New York

Jessica Pegula came from a set down to defeat Leylah Fernandez 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and reach the fourth round at the US Open. She saved eight of the 11 break points she faced and converted all three break points she created, showing her ability to stay in the match despite a difficult start.

This is now Pegula's fifth consecutive round-of-16 appearance at the US Open, making her the fourth-oldest player in the Open Era to achieve the feat. She has also reached the quarterfinals in three of her previous four appearances at this stage.

The American has continued to produce remarkably consistent results this year, winning at least three matches at 12 of the 15 events she has played, including this week. That consistency has helped her remain a threat throughout the season.

Pegula also brings an impressive 10-2 record in Grand Slam round-of-16 matches into this clash. Her most recent defeat at this stage came against Lois Boisson at Roland Garros in 2025.

Cirstea Reaches Another US Open Second Week

Sorana Cirstea produced another impressive performance to defeat Jasmine Paolini 6-3, 6-3 and reach the round of 16 at the US Open. She fell a break behind in both sets but quickly recovered on each occasion before closing out the match in straight sets.

This is only the second time in 19 US Open appearances that Cirstea has reached the second week. Her previous run came three years ago, when she defeated Elena Rybakina and Belinda Bencic in back-to-back matches to reach the quarterfinals.

The Romanian has already announced that this will be her final season on tour, but she continues to play at a high level and make the most of every opportunity. Her performances this year have helped her climb to a career-high ranking of 17.

Cirstea has a 3-3 record in Grand Slam round-of-16 matches, including wins in her last two appearances at the US Open in 2023 and Roland Garros earlier this year. Her most recent defeat at this stage came against Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open in 2022.
