Putintseva Brings a Difficult Run Into New York

Yulia Putintseva has played three events during the North American swing so far, with all of them ending without a main-draw win. Most recently, she suffered a qualifying defeat in Monterrey.

The 31-year-old reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Iasi a few months ago. Apart from those results, however, she has struggled to produce anything notable at tour level this year.

This is her 12th main-draw appearance at the US Open, and she has cleared the opening-round hurdle in seven of her previous 11 appearances, including reaching the quarterfinals in 2020.

Bencic Returns to New York With Fitness Questions

Belinda Bencic has struggled with hip issues in recent weeks. She gave a walkover to Coco Gauff in the Toronto quarterfinals and then retired in the opening round in Cincinnati after losing the first set to Lois Boisson, raising concerns about her fitness.

Before this recent setback, she had produced several solid results this year, reaching the fourth round at Indian Wells, Madrid, the French Open and Wimbledon, along with quarterfinal appearances in Miami and Charleston.

She has played the US Open nine times before and cleared the opening-round hurdle on eight occasions, including her semifinal run in 2019.
