Xiyu Wang Carries Asian Games Gold Momentum Into Home Event

Xiyu Wang competed at the Asian Games a few weeks ago, where she claimed the gold medal after defeating Alexandra Eala in the semifinals and Shuai Zhang in the final. She will now look to carry that momentum into this week's tournament with a strong start.

The 25-year-old returned from injury in March this year and competed in lower-level ITF events to rebuild her form. She recorded five consecutive semifinal-or-better finishes, including three titles, before carrying that momentum onto the main tour and reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros.

However, she has struggled with recurring fitness issues since the end of the clay-court season and has retired from matches twice. Apart from her fourth-round appearance in Cincinnati, she exited in the early rounds in her other five events during that period.

Xinyu Wang Aims to Rediscover Early-Season Form

Xinyu Wang began the Asian swing with a quarterfinal appearance in Singapore but failed to build on that result the following week, losing in the opening round to Sonay Kartal at her home event in Beijing.

She made a strong start to the season by reaching the final in Auckland, the fourth round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Ostrava. However, her level dropped significantly, and she managed multiple main-draw wins in only one of her 15 tournaments from Doha to Toronto.

In recent weeks, she has shown signs of a resurgence, reaching the third round in Cincinnati and the quarterfinals in Singapore. She will look to build on those performances and regain consistency this week.

Verdict

Xiyu Wang leads the head-to-head and will take confidence from her Asian Games gold medal, but her recurring fitness issues and disappointing record in Wuhan give Xinyu Wang the edge in this clash.
