The Adelaide Crows and Fremantle Dockers face off in a pivotal early-season AFL match. Adelaide, seeking redemption after two narrow losses, relies on Josh Rachele's form and home advantage. Fremantle aims to dominate through territory and strong midfield performances from Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong. The Crows' key players are set to return, possibly tipping the scale in their favor. Both teams display strengths; Adelaide's energy early on and Fremantle's inside-50 efficiency. The Crows are slightly favored, with Rachele a standout factor.

Adelaide Crows vs Fremantle Dockers Preview

It will be third time lucky for Adelaide when they take on the Fremantle Dockers in what shapes as a high-pressure and pivotal early season match up.

The Crows have lost their past two matches in narrow fasion and this shapes as another tight one. After winning on the road against Collingwood in Round 1, the Crows have gone down by six to the Western Bulldogs and eight to Geelong.

Meanwhile, the Dockers sit 2-1 and were too good for Richmond last weekend, accounting for the Tigers by 60 points.

Fremantle’s strength is territory and inside 50 dominance. They will look to control field position and open the game up through contest-to-outside transition. Andrew Brayshaw (37 disposals) and Caleb Serong (32) dominated the last meeting between these two sides, while Shai Bolton has had 30+ in his past two matches.

The key for Adelaide in the Round 4 clash is their start. When their pressure and energy are high early, they can control territory and generate scoring chains. Josh Rachele had a career-high 30 disposals last week and has nine goals in his past four against Fremantle, while Josh Worrell’s continues to be a rock in defence.

With the impending return of a number of other key players, as well as the home ground advantage, the Crows look to be the value. Take them in the head to head with Josh Rachele to back up his good work from last weekend. Shai Bolton is an X-factor player for the Dockers that can have a major impact on the way this match pans out.

  • Adelaide have won 12 of their past 14 home and away matches at the Adelaide Oval
  • Josh Rachele had a career-high 31 disposals last week and has kicked nine goals from his past four matches against the Dockers
  • Shai Bolton has had 30+ disposals in his past two matches and has kicked 2+ goals in two of past three against the Crows
  • Key players set to return for the Crows

Head to Head

Fremantle have won five of the past six between the two sides, including an 18-point win in Round 7 last season. Andrew Brayshaw had 37 disposals and Caleb Serong had 32 in that match, while Riley Thilthorpe kicked three goals.

The Dockers are 4-3 at Adelaide Oval in this matchup, showing they can perform well away from home.

Adelaide Crows Form Analysis

Adelaide are 1-2 with a win over Collingwood followed by close losses to the Bulldogs and Geelong. Their performances have shown strong patches but inconsistency.

Their strength is high-energy pressure and the ability to generate scoring chains when intensity is high. Rachele (30 disposals) and Worrell (30) were standouts last week.

Their weakness is slow starts and late fade. They were beaten heavily early in contested possessions and inside 50s last week and struggled to regain control late in the match.

Adelaide Crows Team News

No new injuries from the Geelong match for Adelaide. Jordan Dawson (calf) and Taylor Walker (managed) missed that match and are expected to return, while Mitch Hinge and Toby Murray are potential inclusions, pending results of fitness tests during the week.

Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis

Fremantle have shown strong early form built around clearance and contested possession dominance, ranking top for clearance differential and second for contested possession differential.

The Dockers burst out of the blocks in Round 1 against Geelong in Geelong and opened up what should have been a match winning lead, only to go down by 10. They have since banked wins against Melbourne by 48 and Richmond by 60 at home.

Their ability to generate scoring opportunities through repeat entries has seen Josh Treacy benefit with eight goals in the past two matches, while Caleb Serong and Shai Bolton are both averaging over 25 disposals this season. Andrew Brayshaw was tagged in the Geelong match but is averaging 24.67.

Poor conversion has been a bit of a concern- they booted 13.25 against Richmond last weekend and are going at 43% accuracy in front of the big sticks this season.

Fremantle Dockers Team News

Brennan Cox, Jaeger O’Meara and Brandon Walker are all in the mix to return for the Dockers, who pulled up without any injury concerns from the Richmond match. These inclusions would strengthen both defence and midfield depth.

Verdict

Adelaide to win, with Josh Rachele a strong play for disposals and a goal. Bolton is the X-factor for Dockers
