Collingwood vs Carlton Preview
Carlton's honeymoon period under Josh Fraser is set to hit another roadblock with Collingwood set to score another victory over their rivals.
The Blues seven-match winning streak under their interim coach ended in comprehensive fashion last weekend against Hawthorn and the task at hand will be hard against a Collingwood outfit that are making a run with four straight wins.
The Magpies have found a formula over the past month that is built around elite transition, improved clearance work and an ability to execute in the biggest moments of close games. That combination should prove decisive in another tight rivalry clash.
The key battle will be what happens once the ball leaves the contest. Carlton are at their best when they can win stoppages and control territory through Walsh, Cripps and Cerra, but Collingwood have become one of the AFL's best teams at turning defensive rebounds into scores.
Their ability to move the ball from defensive 50 to forward 50 with speed and precision has become their greatest weapon, and it is an area the coaching staff has highlighted as taking significant strides over the past month. If the Magpies can force Carlton into rushed entries and win the ball back, they will create repeat scoring opportunities.
Against a Carlton side that was exposed by Hawthorn's pressure and intercept game last week, the Magpies look well equipped to apply similar heat and capitalise on turnovers in the
Round 19 match.
Expect another classic between these fierce rivals, but Collingwood's superior system and ability to adapt to different game styles should see them edge clear late. Nick Daicos shapes as the game's most influential player once again, while Sam Walsh should continue his outstanding record against the Magpies and accumulate plenty of the football in what promises to be another high-quality midfield battle.
- Collingwood have won the past five matches between the two sides.
- Eighteen of the past 19 matches between the Magpies and the Blues have been decided by 30 points or less.
- Nick Daicos has averaged 37.5 disposals in his past two matches against Carlton.
- Sam Walsh has averaged 32 disposals in his past eight matches against the Magpies.
Head to Head
Collingwood have won the past five matches between the two sides, including the Round 6 meeting this season by six points. Five of the past nine have been decided by a goal or less, while 18 of the past 19 have been decided by 30 points or fewer.
Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;
- Nick Daicos (Magpies) – 39 and 36 disposals in his past two matches against the Blues.
- Sam Walsh (Blues) – 30+ disposals in five of his past seven against the Magpies, with 28 and 29 in the other two.
- Dan McStay (Magpies) – Six goals from his past two matches against Carlton.
- Mitch McGovern (Blues) – Three goals in the Round 6 meeting earlier this season.
Collingwood head into Round 19 with a 9-7-1 record and have built excellent momentum, winning their past four matches against North Melbourne, Gold Coast, Richmond and Port Adelaide. They continue to find ways to win close contests and remain unbeaten in seven matches this season against teams below them on the ladder.
The Magpies survived another thriller last weekend, edging North Melbourne by four points after producing the decisive moments late in the final quarter. Nick Daicos was again influential with 28 disposals despite having his streak of six consecutive 30-disposal games snapped. Prior to that he had produced 35 or more disposals in five straight matches and has now reached 35+ in five of his past seven outings.
Dan McStay continued his outstanding form with three goals, while Tim Membrey added two and has now kicked multiple goals in each of his past four matches. McStay has also booted three goals in each of his past two games.
Collingwood Team News
The biggest concern for the Magpies is Lachie Schultz, who suffered an ankle injury against North Melbourne. Early indications are a syndesmosis injury, with scans set to determine the severity and his availability but he will be one player that will miss.
Outside of Schultz, Collingwood escaped Friday night's win without any fresh injury concerns. Nick Daicos spent periods receiving treatment during the match but played out the game strongly, producing another match-winning final quarter. Isaac Quaynor is set to return, while Roan Steele has some solid VFL form and will be considered.
Carlton sit just outside of the Wildcard zone in 12th position with an 8-9 win-loss record and had their seven-match winning streak under Josh Fraser brought to an abrupt end with a 64-point loss to Hawthorn. The Blues managed just six goals and were comprehensively beaten, particularly after half-time when Hawthorn's intercept game and contested work took control.
Sam Walsh again stood tall with 35 disposals and has now produced 30 or more disposals in three of his past four matches. Mitch McGovern was Carlton's only multiple goalkicker with two majors, while George Hewett's evening ended prematurely after suffering a back injury, leaving him with just nine disposals. Prior to that setback, Hewett had recorded 25 or more disposals in four of his previous five matches.
The Blues were exposed from turnovers against Hawthorn, conceding 49 points from intercepts, including seven goals generated from forward-half intercepts. Cleaning up their ball use and denying Collingwood's dangerous transition game will be critical if they are to return to the form that produced seven consecutive victories prior to last weekend.

George Hewett is the major injury concern after being substituted against Hawthorn with a back injury. His availability will be determined during the week.
Lewis Young entered concussion protocols after being ruled out against Richmond in Round 17 and is a chance to return, while Lachie Fogarty was prominent at VFL level last weekend and is a possible replacement for Hewett.
