Gold Coast Suns vs Western Bulldogs Preview

This shapes as one of the trickiest games of the round but it is impossible to take the Suns in the head to head, given their recent run of form that has seen them crash out of finals contention with seven losses in a row.

The Suns remain capable of producing their best football at home, but confidence is at rock bottom, while the Western Bulldogs continue to find ways to win despite not always producing their best. In a match that could have a huge bearing on the finals race, the Bulldogs represent genuine value in the head-to-head market, while the total points over looks to be right in play.

The biggest battle in the Round 19 match will be around the contest. Gold Coast have been one of the AFL's better clearance teams over the past two seasons, but that area has deserted them during this losing streak. The Bulldogs boast one of the competition's deepest midfields and, if Marcus Bontempelli, Ed Richards and Tom Liberatore can control stoppages, they should generate enough supply to overwhelm the Suns.

The Bulldogs also possess greater flexibility going forward. Aaron Naughton is in excellent form, while Cody Weightman is beginning to rediscover his touch after a lengthy injury lay-off. His forward pressure and ability to create opportunities around goal could prove a major factor against a Gold Coast defence that has struggled to defend repeat inside-50 entries in recent weeks.

Gold Coast certainly have the talent to respond through Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Touk Miller and Ben King, but recent performances suggest they are lacking confidence and consistency across four quarters. Until the Suns show they can rediscover their contested brand and sustain it for an entire match, they are difficult to trust.

The Bulldogs look capable of controlling the midfield battle, creating enough scoring opportunities to prevail in what should be an entertaining, high-scoring contest. Take the Western Bulldogs head-to-head, the total match points to go over, Marcus Bontempelli for another 25-plus disposals and Cody Weightman to continue building momentum with two or more goals.

  • Gold Coast have lost seven matches in a row.
  • The seven matches at People First Stadium in 2026 have produced an average total of 195 points.
  • Marcus Bontempelli has recorded 25+ disposals in five of his past six matches against the Suns.
  • Cody Weightman has kicked 10 goals in his past three matches against Gold Coast.

Head to Head

The Suns were 10-point winners in the most recent meeting, played in Darwin in Round 9 last season. They have won two of the past three clashes between the two sides but have lost their past two home matches against the Bulldogs.

Standout player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;

  • Marcus Bontempelli (Dogs) – 25+ disposals in five of his past six matches against the Suns, including 30+ in three of those.
  • Touk Miller (Suns) – 25+ disposals in five of his past six matches against the Bulldogs.
  • Ben King (Suns) – Two or more goals in each of his past five matches against the Bulldogs.
  • Cody Weightman (Dogs) – Six goals in his most recent outing against the Suns and 10 goals from his past three meetings, kicking two or more in each.

Gold Coast Suns Form Analysis

Gold Coast head into Round 19 with a 7-10 record and their season hanging by a thread after seven consecutive defeats. They slipped to 13th on the ladder following a 79-point loss to Adelaide and have now lost their past 10 matches against teams currently inside the top 10. Their recent home form has also deserted them, with three straight losses at People First Stadium against Brisbane, Hawthorn and Collingwood.

The Suns produced their poorest performance of the season against Adelaide, being comprehensively beaten around the contest and at clearance. Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson continued to fight with 25-plus disposals each, while Jed Walter kicked three of Gold Coast's seven goals, but they simply couldn't generate enough quality ball movement or sustained forward pressure to challenge the Crows.

Confidence appears to be the biggest issue. The Suns have shown they can match quality opposition in patches, but their inability to maintain intensity across four quarters has become a recurring theme. They have the midfield talent to compete with the Bulldogs, but unless they can rediscover their contested edge, another difficult afternoon looms.

Gold Coast Suns Team News

Will Graham suffered a dislocated shoulder against Adelaide and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Gold Coast's injury list remains a concern, with several experienced players unavailable, leaving the Suns to continue exposing a number of exciting first-year players. Daniel Rioli and Lachie Weller are among a couple that could return, while Sam Clohesy was excellent in the VFL last weekend.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs sit seventh on the ladder with a 10-7 record and continue to keep themselves firmly in the finals race. While they weren't at their fluent best against West Coast, they found a way to grind out a 16-point victory, demonstrating the resilience that has become a feature of their season. They have also won three of their four matches against interstate opposition when interstate in 2026.

Marcus Bontempelli again proved the difference against the Eagles, collecting 25 disposals, 12 clearances and two crucial third-quarter goals. Bailey Dale (29 disposals) and Ed Richards (28) controlled large periods through the midfield, while Aaron Naughton continued his solid form in the absence of Sam Darcy with five goals. Bontempelli has now recorded 25 or more disposals in three of his past four matches, Dale has produced 30-plus disposals in five of his past eight, Richards has reached 25-plus in four of his past five, and Naughton has kicked 10 goals across his past four games.

Although the Bulldogs have not consistently put lesser sides away, they continue to win the key moments. Their midfield depth and clearance work remain major strengths, scoring 47 points from stoppages against West Coast despite the Eagles winning the contested possession count. If they bring that same contested intensity, they should have enough class to overcome the struggling Suns.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Bailey Dale finished last week's win with a shoulder knock but is expected to be available. Tim English is also a chance to return after missing the victory over West Coast with a back complaint.

Connor Budarick remains under assessment after suffering a lower leg injury the previous week, while Cody Weightman continues to build fitness and match conditioning after his long-term injury lay-off. Aside from Dale's minor concern, the Bulldogs emerged from Round 18 in good shape.

Verdict

Dogs to win with the total match points to go over. Bontempelli and Weightman busy for the Bulldogs.
