In an exciting tussle at Norwood Oval, the Geelong Cats aim to capitalize on their structured, system-driven approach to outplay West Coast Eagles. Geelong, with a current win-loss record of 2-2, hopes to rebound after a close defeat to Hawthorn. Key players like Jeremy Cameron and Bailey Smith are expected to shine against a West Coast team recovering from a hefty 128-point defeat to Sydney. Past performance trends favor Geelong, with a recommendation for Cameron to score 3+ goals in what could be a sizable win.

Geelong Cats vs West Coast Eagles Preview

Geelong will bounce back in emphatic fashion when they take on West Coast at Norwood Oval in Gather Round.

The Cats were below their best in the one-point loss to Hawthorn, failing to execute in key moments late in the match. They come in with a 2-2 win-loss record, the same as West Coast, who surprised many with back to back wins recently.

The Eagles copped a bit of a brutal reality check against Sydney in Round 4, going down by 128 points. They have struggled badly against the competition’s better and midfield setups, and with the likes of Bailey Smith and Max Holmes in strong touch, while the Cats should generate repeat inside 50s through their contested work and cleaner ball use than what they managed against Hawthorn.

The upside for Geelong is that they still pushed a quality Hawthorn side to the brink despite not playing cleanly, and that points to a far more polished performance here against an Eagles outfit coming off a 128-point reality check against Sydney.

Their ability to score from stoppage and deep forward entries should expose the Eagles in the Gather Round clash. Jeremy Cameron shapes as the key bounce-back player. He played higher up the ground last week but against an Eagles defence that was repeatedly exposed by Sydney’s speed and movement, this looks the perfect matchup for Cameron to return to form closer to goal. Take him for 3+ goals in a Cats win to cover the 39.5 margin, while Bailey Smith will continue to find plenty of the footy.

  • Geelong have won the past six matches against West Coast by an average margin of 64 points.
  • Five of the past six have gone above the 39.5 point margin
  • Jeremy Cameron has kicked 18 goals in his past three matches against the Eagles
  • Bailey Smith had 38 disposals the last time the two sides met

Head to Head

Geelong have won the past six matches against West Coast by an average margin of 64 points with five of those going above the 39.5 point margin, including the Round 12 fixture last season by 43 at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Jeremy Cameron kicked five goals in that match and has snagged 18 in his past three against the Eagles, while Bailey Smith had 38 disposals and has hit the 30+ in two of his past three when against the Eagles.

Geelong Cats Form Analysis

Geelong have had had a tough draw so far this season and sit with a win-loss record of 2-2. The past three of those have been decided by 10 points of less, defeating Fremantle by that margin and Adelaide by eight, before last weeks one point loss to Hawthorn.

Their key strength lies in a highly structured, system-driven game built around contest dominance and controlled ball movement. Against Adelaide, they recorded 159-127 contested possessions and 67-45 inside 50s, with Bailey Smith (40 disposals) and Max Holmes (27) leading the way, while Jack Martin (three goals) and Ollie Dempsey (two) benefited from strong supply.

However, they struggled with the Hawks pressure at key moments last weekend and let themselves down with poor execution, butchering some key opportunities late in the piece. Smith again found a stack of footy with 33 disposals, while Shannon Neale kicked four goals.

Geelong Cats Team News

Patrick Dangerfield is edging closer towards a return from a calf injury but may need an extra week. James Worpel was busy in the VFL for a second successive week and will be considered to make his return for the Cats.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast won two matches in succession for the first time since late in 2024 with their wins over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide but were given a brutal reminder of where they are at with their 128 point loss to the Sydney Swans last weekend.

They went 1-23 last season and will be out to arrest the uncompetitive display against Sydney.

Tim Kelly had 24 disposals to follow his 23 against Port. Jake Waterman kicked one goal from limited opportunities with the Eagles going down 45-61 in the insde 50 count and 289-427 in disposals, 28-41 in clearances.

West Coast Eagles Team News

Elliot Yeo missed the Sydney match with a groin injury and may need another week on the sidelines. Bailey Williams and Elijah Hewett both made successful returns via the WAFL and are among a couple that could come in, while the former Collingwood midfielder, Fin McCrae, Clay Hall and Tyrell Dewar, also have solid form at the lower level.

Verdict

Cats to hand Eagles another sizeable loss with Cameron to bounce back. Bailey Smith to find a stack of footy yet again.
