2026 North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Fremantle Dockers Preview
Fremantle will outlast an improving North Melbourne outfit when the two sides square off in Bunbury on Saturday afternoon.
The rampant Dockers have won 11 in a row to sit with an 11-1 record and head in as strong favourites against the 5-6 Kangaroos, who come in fresh off the bye in Round 12.
Aside from a second quarter blowout against Adelaide a fortnight ago, the Kangaroos have been competitive against the better sides in the past three weeks, pushing the then ladder leaders, Sydney, in Round 9, while they came from the clouds to defeat the 5th placed Gold Coast Suns in their most recent match.
North Melbourne have developed a midfield group that is capable of matching it with the competition's best. Luke Davies-Uniacke, Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw and Tristan Xerri have all enjoyed strong seasons, while the Kangaroos have shown they can remain competitive even when momentum swings against them. Their energy around the contest and ability to keep fighting has become a feature of their improvement.
That should ensure Fremantle do not have things all their own way through the middle of the ground in the
Round 13 fixture. The Dockers remain one of the most complete teams in the competition, but North Melbourne have the midfield talent and attacking intent to stay within striking distance for much of the afternoon.
The concern for the Kangaroos comes at the other end of the ground. Their defence continues to be vulnerable and now faces arguably the most dangerous key forward combination in the AFL. Patrick Voss, Josh Treacy and Jye Amiss have become a genuine three-headed monster inside Fremantle's forward 50 and shape as the biggest difference between the two sides.
Voss has kicked 12 goals in his past three matches, Amiss has 13 in his past four, while Treacy has kicked multiple goals in six consecutive matches. The Dockers' ability to generate quality inside 50 entries and isolate those forwards one-on-one makes them extremely difficult to defend for four quarters.
Fremantle's ball movement has become increasingly polished during their winning streak and they continue to find ways to put games beyond reach with short bursts of scoreboard pressure. Even when opposition midfields have matched them around stoppages, their ability to defend strongly behind the ball and capitalise through their key forwards has been a defining feature of their rise to the top of the ladder.
North Melbourne should be competitive around the contest and have enough midfield quality to create opportunities. Harry Sheezel has enjoyed this matchup in recent seasons and has recorded 30+ disposals in each of his past three matches against Fremantle, while Davies-Uniacke shapes as another player capable of winning plenty of the football.
The Kangaroos also come in fresher after the bye and have shown enough against quality opposition this season to suggest they can remain within reach on the scoreboard.
Fremantle deserve favouritism and should continue their winning run. Take them in margin markets between 1-39 or 1-24 for value with Voss on for another three goals. Sheezel can find plenty of footy for North, who were winners at this venue against West Coast in 2025.
- North Melbourne went down by just six points the last time the two sides met.
- Patrick Voss kicked three goals in that match and has bagged 12 in his past three.
- Harry Sheezel has had 30+ disposals in his past three matches against the Dockers.
- The Kangaroos had the bye in Round 12.
Head to Head
North Melbourne went down by six points the last time the two sides met, with that match played at Optus Stadium last season. The Dockers have won six of the past seven outings between the two sides.
Standout player performances in the recent head to heads have come from:
- Nick Larkey (Roos) – three goals in the most recent head to head.
- Patrick Voss (Dockers) – three goals in the most recent head to head.
- Harry Sheezel (Roos) – 30+ disposals in his past three against the Dockers.
- Caleb Serong (Dockers) – 30+ disposals in his past three against the Kangaroos.
North Melbourne are showing plenty of promising signs, despite some inconsistency and an inability to fully shake some of the defensive woes that have plagued them in previous seasons. After a poor 68-point loss to Adelaide in Round 10 when conceding 10 goals to none in the second quarter, they responded with a stirring comeback victory to topple the Gold Coast Suns by six points in Round 11.
Alastair Clarkson's side come off the bye last weekend and have a 5-6 win-loss record. They are averaging just under 100 points per game but have given up three figures in their past five outings, losing four on the trot prior to the Suns win.
Luke Davies-Uniacke had 30 disposals and seven clearances against Gold Coast, while Harry Sheezel had 32 and six. Sheezel has hit 30+ in four of his past six, while Davies-Uniacke has 30+ in two of his past three. The Kangaroos have an even spread of goalkickers. Nick Larkey leads the way with 25 from his 11 matches, while Paul Curtis has kicked five in his past two matches for a total of 22 for the season.
North Melbourne Kangaroos Team News
Callum Coleman-Jones suffered a concussion in the win against the Suns but may be able to play as he would have served out the concussion protocols with the Kangaroos having the bye last weekend. Robert Hansen Jnr and Zac Fisher returned from injury in the VFL and may be considered.
Fremantle are a game clear in top spot on the ladder with an 11-1 win-loss record after their 25-point away win over Brisbane. Their ability to absorb pressure and open up winning margins has been one of the defining features of their 11-match winning streak.
Against Brisbane they went down in the inside 50 count and clearances but defended well and dominated possession with a host of players recording 20+ disposals, while Patrick Voss, Jye Amiss and Josh Treacy combined for 11 goals and were hard to stop inside forward 50.
Amiss has kicked 13 goals in the past four rounds, while Voss has 12 from the past three. Treacy has kicked 2+ in each of his past six.
