2026 Coral-Eclipse Stakes Tips - Irish three-year-olds to the fore at Sandown
The 2026 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown is set to be one of the summer's highlights, matching top three-year-olds against seasoned older horses over 10 furlongs. Constitution River leads the market after recent Group One wins, with Hawk Mountain, Gethin, and Saddadd as notable contenders. However, recent history favors three-year-olds, and A Boy Named Susie—despite some bad luck in previous races—has been tipped as a strong each-way bet thanks to his consistent improvement, advantageous weight allowance, and preparation for this key event.

2026 Coral-Eclipse Stakes Runners
Having initially suggested that he'll only be running one out of the two, Aidan O'Brien has confirmed both Constitution River and Hawk Mountain in the field for Saturday's Coral-Eclipse.
Ryan Moore will keep the faith with Constitution River, who he rode to victory in both the Dee Stakes and the Prix du Jockey Club. Hawk Mountain finished second to his stablemate in that French Classic, but boasts Group One form of his own, having won the Futurity Trophy at Doncaster as a juvenile.
Owen Burrows will be represented by Gethin, who finished a close second to future Royal Ascot winner Ombudsman in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Saddadd ran out an impressive winner of the Gordon Richards Stakes here in April, and comes into the Eclipse on the back of an excellent third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. Donnacha O'Brien has stated that Prix du Jockey Club fourth, A Boy Named Susie is being trained for a tilt at this lucrative Group One.
There's then a yawning chasm in the betting until we reach the two pacemakers in the field. Flushing Meadows is running for Ballydoyle, with King's Gambit representing Gethin's owners, Wathnan Racing, who stumped up the supplementary fee earlier in the week.
2026 Coral-Eclipse Stakes Tips
Gethin and Saddadd bring really strong form into Saturday's main event. However, the ten-pound weight allowance that three-year-olds receive in the Coral-Eclipse has been instrumental in the younger generation's recent domination of this Group One.
Eight of the last 11 renewals of the Eclipse have gone the way of the younger generation. Enable beat just one three-year-old in 2019, and there were no three-year-olds in the field as Ghaiyyath struck the following season.
I truly believe that Constitution River is the best of this year's crop of three-year-old colts, and the race will likely be run to suit, with Hawk Mountain and the pace-setting Flushing Meadows in the field. A BOY NAMED SUSIE (8/1) has three lengths to find on the market leader from their clash in the Prix du Jockey Club, and that race couldn't have panned out much worse for Donnacha O'Brien's raider.
Ryan Moore opted to stay wide aboard Constitution River from his draw in stall 15, and managed to slot in in third place as their field entered the first bend. Maxime Guyon seemed keen to find a prominent early position from stall 13, but A Boy Named Susie was a little slow out of the blocks, and Guyon was forced to bide his time at the rear.
Going into the bend, A Boy Named Susie sat third-last and on the outside of the field. The three Ballydoyle runners kicked for home before they even straightened up for home, and Guyon found his path into contention blocked on a couple of occasions. In the end, A Boy Named Susie had to be angled onto the inside rail to try and make up some ground, and Donnacha will have been pleased to see his top colt hit the line hard back in fourth-place, completing a 1-2-3-4 for the O'Brien family.
Oisin Murphy rode A Boy Names Susie when the two were third behind Epsom Derby winner Christmas Day in the Ballysax, and spent more time talking about Donnacha's contender in the build-up to the Prix du Jockey Club than he did Oxagon, who he rode to finish 12th in that French Classic. Murphy and A Boy Named Susie will be reunited in Saturday's feature at Sandown, and Donnacha hasn't shied away from that fact that they've been training their three-year-old with this race in mind since France.
A Boy Named Susie hasn't won since his debut at Killarney last July. However, Oisin Murphy's mount has improved with each of his starts since then, he boasts genuine Group One form and, like the market leader, he'll be getting stacks of weight from the older horses ahead of him in the market.
