The Paddy Power Gold Cup, a prestigious Grade Three Handicap Chase, headlines the second day of the November Meeting at Cheltenham. With significant attention on past winners like Imperial Commander, this year's race sees Jagwar as the favorite despite a challenging weight. Notably, Panic Attack emerges as a strong contender, carrying favorable racing weight and favoring soft ground. Trainer Dan Skelton aims for success as the mare has previously shown promise at Cheltenham. Historical trends emphasize the importance of age, past performance at Cheltenham, and recent race experience for winning horses.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup tops the billing on day two of the November Meeting at Cheltenham. This Grade Three Handicap Chase has been won by plenty of classy horses since it was created in 1960 - including Imperial Commander, who scored in 2008 before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup 18 months later.

I've taken a look through the ante-post betting for Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup and listed some key recurring trends, before picking out my best betting tips.

2025 Paddy Power Gold Cup Trends

  • 17 of the last 18 winners had previously run at Cheltenham
  • 17 of the last 18 winners were aged between six and nine
  • 15 of the last 18 winners had run in a Grade One over hurdles or fences
  • 14 of the last 18 winners had run between five and nine times over fences
  • 14 of the last 18 winners were rated between 137 and 147
  • 14 of the last 18 winners had won or placed over fences at Cheltenham
  • 14 of the last 18 winners went off at 12/1 or shorter
  • 13 of the last 18 winners carried 11-00 or less
  • 13 of the last 18 winners had run that season (including 9 of last 11)

Having placed in the 2023 renewal on his reappearance, Paul Nicholls' got a run into Il Ridoto before returning to Cheltenham 12 months ago, and Freddie Gingell's mount ran out an easy winner under a feather-weight of 9-13. Il Ridoto ran well on his prep-run at Chepstow, but will have to carry 11-8 in Saturday's feature, and the prospect of soft ground won't fill Harry Cobden with confidence.

Festival Plate winner, Jagwar is favourite to make it five wins from six starts over fences. Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero's star has, however, been lumbered with 12-00, and it would be a big ask for Jagwar to carry that much weight to victory on his seasonal bow.

2025 Paddy Power Gold Cup Tip 1 - Panic Attack

Most of Dan Skelton's runners have improved for their first run of the season. PANIC ATTACK (6/1) comes here fresh, but the fact that Harry Skelton has opted to ride her over race-fit stablemates Hoe Joly Smoke and Riskintheground must suggest that she's fit and ready to fire.

Despite being one of the oldest runners in the field, Panic Attack has only run five times over fences. Skelton's recruit bolted up on her sole chasing start last term during the Winter Millions' Meeting, and was being prepped for the Festival Plate before a small setback ended her season early.

Panic Attack won a Listed Handicap Hurdle here at Cheltenham in April 2022, and placed fourth in a handicap chase here on Trials Day in 2023 - with future Grade One winner Stage Star, future Coral Gold Cup winner Datsalrightgino, and future Grand Annual winner Unexpected Party crossing the line ahead of her.

Skelton has been hoping for rain for this soft-ground-loving mare, and Panic Attack enters this winnable contest carrying a lovely racing weight of 11-1.
