In a compelling Anzac Eve match-up, the Brisbane Broncos face off against the Canterbury Bulldogs. Despite the Broncos' injury-hit squad missing key players like Payne Haas, they are known for their resilience, showcased in a recent close win over the Tigers. However, recurring defensive issues may impact their performance. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs, recovering from a loss to Parramatta, could leverage their tackling strengths, making them favourites to cover a 4.5 point handicap. The game is expected to be under 49.5 points, with Jacob Preston likely to score.

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview

Brisbane’s depleted pack is set to hamper them in this Anzac Eve clash with the Canterbury Bulldogs backed to cover the -4.5 points handicap. The under 49.5 points is also predicted.

  • Brisbane will be missing Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan and Corey Jensen this match.
  • 4 of 6 Canterbury matches have gone under the game total.
  • 4 of the last 5 Brisbane matches have gone under the game total

Head to Head

Brisbane won both matches against the Bulldogs in 2025, including a commanding 42-18 victory on Anzac Eve last season, followed by a tighter 22-18 affair in Round 18.

The Broncos have woneight of the last 10 matches against the Bulldogs.

Four of the last five matches have gone over the game total.

Brisbane Broncos Form

Brisbane are quietly building a strong season at 4–3, grinding out results even when undermanned and not at their best.

A tight 21–20 victory over the Tigers  highlighted both their resilience and areas for concern. Despite being outplayed in key areas like possession, run metres and territory, the Broncos found a way to close the game through experience, with Adam Reynolds’ field goal sealing it late.

Across their last five, Brisbane have been consistently competitive, averaging around 24 points scored while conceding under 19.

Their ability to absorb pressure and still win is a major strength, driven by a powerful forward pack generating strong post-contact metres, however that will take a significant hit with the long-term injury to Payne Haas.

Defensive lapses and periods of poor control remain an issue, particularly when they lose the middle battle.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form

Canterbury enter this matchup with a 3–3 record and come off a disappointing 38–20 loss to Parramatta, a result that exposed some inconsistency in their game.

Despite holding their own in possession, they failed to create enough opportunities due to too many errors and defensive lapses proved costly, allowing the Eels to capitalise and pull away. Injuries, including a concern for Jacob Kiraz, may also impact their depth heading into this clash.

The Bulldogs have been inconsistent across their last five, alternating wins and losses while averaging just over 21 points and conceding 24.

Their strength lies in effort areas like tackling and work rate, but they can struggle against teams that generate strong yardage and dominate the middle.

While capable of competing, particularly when they control possession, Canterbury’s inability to create real attacking opportunities remains a key concern against stronger opposition.

Verdict

Jacob Preston is backed to score in a match that ends with less than 49.5 points. Canterbury will control the middle and cover as 4.5 point favourites.
