Tomas Machac hasn’t dropped a set in three wins in Paris and Arthur Fils might not be fully fit after retiring in Basel. I am backing Machac to win the first set and give himself a chance of a shock victory.

Fils Faces Fitness Test
Arthur Fils won titles in Barcelona, Cincinnati and became a Top 10 player in September. He reached the Tokyo quarter-finals before a third round exit in Shanghai.
The Frenchman has been unable to reach a final in Europe, losing to Jan Lennard Struff in the Brussels semi-finals.
The 22-year-old beat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Alex Michelsen in Basel before retiring at 6-2 2-0 down to Taylor Fritz.
Fils appears to have overcome the leg injury in order to compete in Paris and attempt to qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time.
Machac Serving Strong in Paris
Tomas Machac won the Adelaide International in January but wasn’t able to maintain that form. He dropped as low as World No.75 in September.
The 26-year-old met Alex de Minaur in the first round in Vienna last week, getting off to a great start before going down 1-6 6-4 6-3.
The Czech cruised through the qualifiers in Paris, defeating Martin Landaluce 6-4 6-3 and Sebastian Baez 6-2 6-4. He came home strong to beat Kyrian Jacquet 7-6 6-1 in the first round and has now saved all seven break points in France.
