Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz, both Americans, will clash in the Stuttgart final after grinding through difficult matches this week. Neither player has shown consistent dominant form, suggesting a close contest ahead. Shelton is in his first grass-court final, while Fritz is attempting to defend his 5-0 record in grass finals. The head-to-head favors Shelton 2-1. Given both players' strong serves and recent form, expect tight sets and possibly a match featuring tiebreaks and three sets.

Shelton Reaches First Grass-Court Final

Ben Shelton moved into the final in Stuttgart after defeating Jiri Lehecka in a dramatic three-set battle, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. He faced two match points in the second-set tiebreak and was on the verge of a straight-sets defeat before turning the match around.

The American has followed a similar path throughout the week, dropping the opening set in all three of his matches before completing the comeback. Earlier in the tournament, he defeated Marcos Giron and Sho Shimabukuro in three sets.

This is the first grass-court final of Shelton's career at tour level. His previous best results on the surface were a semifinal appearance in Stuttgart and a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon, both achieved last year.

The run comes at an important time for the American, who had struggled for results in recent months. Since February, he had won multiple main-draw matches at only one tournament from his previous eight events, making this his best week in quite some time.

Shelton owns a strong 5-2 record in ATP finals and is currently on a three-match winning streak at this stage. His most recent title came in Munich earlier this year, where he defeated Flavio Cobolli in the championship match.

Defending Champion One Win Away Again

Taylor Fritz followed his back-to-back three-set wins over Martin Landaluce and Mattia Bellucci by raising his level against Alexander Bublik, defeating him 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final in Stuttgart. He fired 13 aces and dropped serve only once during the match.

Fritz is now just one win away from defending a title in consecutive seasons for the third time in his career. He previously achieved the feat at Eastbourne and Delray Beach, and now has the opportunity to do the same in Stuttgart.

It has been an ideal start to the grass-court season for the American and gives him valuable momentum ahead of a demanding stretch. Over the next few weeks, he will have to defend his title in Eastbourne as well as his semifinal points from Wimbledon.

The 28-year-old has dealt with knee issues for much of the season and played only two events between March and the start of the grass swing, prioritizing recovery and preparation for Wimbledon. So far, that decision appears to be paying off.

Fritz owns a perfect 5-0 record in grass-court finals. Four of those titles came in Eastbourne, while three of those championship-match victories were against fellow Americans. He will be looking to extend that unbeaten record this week.

Verdict

Given their serving strengths and the fact that neither has looked dominant, a closely contested battle featuring tight sets appears highly likely. Backing over 1.5 tiebreaks in the match, Over 2.5 sets, and over 10.5 games in the first set all align well with the expected match pattern.
