Daniel Altmaier and Alexander Zverev face off in the Italian Open second round, with Zverev favored after a recent final loss in Madrid. Altmaier, despite a modest record this season, has previously beaten Zverev and typically extends matches past 19.5 games. With both players showing signs of resilience and tight recent matches, the recommendation is to back this contest to go over 19.5 games. Fans can watch the action live online, with tips favoring a competitive encounter.

Daniel Altmaier has gone over 19.5 games in his last four defeats and has a victory against Alexander Zverev under his belt. I am avoiding the short odds on the favourite here and backing this one to go over 19.5 games.

Altmaier Outclassed on the ATP Tour

Daniel Altmaier’s search for an ATP Tour title continues, hardly going close this year where he has a 4-12 record at the top level.

The German came the closest in Bucharest where he lost 6-2 7-6 to Fabian Marozsan in the quarter-finals.

The 27-year-old was unable to get past the second round in Monte Carlo, Munich and Madrid.

Altmaier got past World No.239 Zhizhen Zhang 4-6 7-6 6-4 in his opening match in Rome, saving 3/6 break points.

Zverev Searching for First Title in 2026

Alexander Zverev lost his first five semi-finals this year, four of them against Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.

The German corrected that anomaly with ease in Madrid, not allowing a break point in a 6-2 7-5 semi-final victory over Alexander Blockx.

The 29-year-old ran into Sinner in the final and was completely outplayed, going down 6-1 6-2 in 57 minutes.

Verdict

Alexander Zverev is a short priced favourite here after coming off a heavy final defeat to Jannik Sinner in Madrid. He might need some time to find his rhythm against Daniel Altmaier with over 19.5 games my only selection.
