Shnaider Returns to Tokyo Last Four With Final in Sight

Diana Shnaider defeated Alexandra Eala from a set down to reach the semifinals in Tokyo, winning 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. After losing the opening set, she saved all five break points she faced to complete the comeback.

This is Shnaider’s second semifinal appearance in Tokyo. Two years ago, she reached this stage but lost to Qinwen Zheng in straight sets. She will now be looking for a better result this week.

The Russian has been playing some of her best tennis in recent months, winning at least two matches in seven of her last eight events. Her recent results include semifinal appearances in Washington, Ningbo and Tokyo, alongside quarterfinal runs in Toronto and Wuhan.

Shnaider is currently on a five-match losing streak in tour-level semifinals and will be looking to reach her first final since winning the title in Monterrey in 2025.

Mia Pohankova Reaches Maiden Tour-Level Semifinal

After recording the biggest win of her career against Naomi Osaka, Mia Pohankova defeated Alycia Parks in straight sets to book her place in the semifinals, winning 7-6, 6-3. She trailed by a break in the second set but fought back to seal the match in straight sets.

This is the first tour-level semifinal of Pohankova’s career. Her previous best result at this level was reaching the quarterfinals in Chennai last year.

A few months ago, she was ranked around No. 250, but back-to-back WTA 125 semifinal appearances in Portugal, alongside a third-round run in Wuhan and her semifinal run in Tokyo, have brought her close to making her top-100 debut.
