Karolina Pliskova aims to reach her first semifinal since 2024, showing promising form despite recent injury challenges. She enters the Linz quarterfinal after solid wins over Alexandrova and Sasnovich, marking a return to form on clay. In contrast, Donna Vekic, who advanced due to a walkover, struggles with consistency on clay, evidenced by a 1-2 record in tour-level clay quarterfinals. Pliskova's superior head-to-head record (7-3) against Vekic suggests she has the edge in their upcoming clash.

Vekic Advances After Walkover Win

Donna Vekic moved into the quarterfinal in Linz after Anhelina Kalinina gave a walkover. Earlier this week, she came through qualifying with three wins, two of them in three sets.

This marks her third consecutive quarterfinal appearance in Linz. She lost at this stage to Maria Sakkari in 2023 and went one step further in 2024.

Since her final run at the Paris Olympics 2024, her form has declined significantly, dropping her outside the top 100 for the first time in nearly four years.

Vekic has played only three tour-level quarterfinals on clay in her career, losing to Irina-Camelia Begu in Istanbul 2018 and Naomi Osaka in Stuttgart 2019, before reaching the final at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Pliskova Back To Winning Ways

Karolina Pliskova reached the quarterfinal in Linz with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. Earlier in the week, she also defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets.

This is her first tour-level quarterfinal since Nottingham 2024 and her first back-to-back wins on clay since Stuttgart 2023.

The result is particularly impressive given her recent struggles with fitness. She suffered a severe ankle injury at the US Open in 2024, which kept her sidelined for nearly 12 months, and she has played only a handful of events since returning.

Pliskova holds a 10-8 career record in tour-level quarterfinals on clay, winning seven of her last nine matches at this stage. Her most recent appearance ended in a loss to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart 2023.

Verdict

Despite returning from injury and still searching for her best level, Karolina Pliskova has shown enough quality this week to be favored. Donna Vekic, meanwhile, has an underwhelming record on this surface and hasn’t looked convincing, which gives Pliskova the edge.
