Maja Chwalinska and Mirra Andreeva face off in the 2026 French Open final, both reaching new career heights. Chwalinska's streak as a qualifier is remarkable, defeating multiple top-50 opponents and making history as the lowest-ranked finalist at Roland Garros. Andreeva, at only 19, enters as the heavy favorite, boasting an 18-0 record versus players outside the Top 50 this year and impressive victories over in-form players. The recommendation: Andreeva’s current form and consistency make her the likely champion.

Chwalinska has enjoyed a breakthrough week, but Andreeva’s commanding wins over high-quality opponents suggest she is operating on another level right now and remains the favorite to claim the title.

A New Champion Awaits

  • Maja Chwalinska has a 4–3 career record against Top 50 players.
  • She holds a 10–4 record in finals at lower-level events.
  • Mirra Andreeva holds a 5–2 record in tour-level finals.
  • She owns a perfect 18–0 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.

From Qualifying to the Championship Match

Maja Chwalinska defeated Diana Shnaider in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4, to reach her maiden tour-level final and first Grand Slam final. She held a 3-1 lead in the opening set but was forced into a tiebreak, where she trailed 2-4 before winning five consecutive points to take the set, a crucial moment in the match.

With this victory, Chwalinska becomes only the second qualifier in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final after Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open, and the first qualifier ever to achieve the feat at Roland Garros. She is also the lowest-ranked French Open finalist since the rankings were introduced in 1975.

The Pole has won nine matches in Paris, with eight of those victories coming in straight sets. Along the way, she defeated notable opponents such as Qinwen Zheng, Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari. Before this tournament, she had never beaten a Top 50 player in her career.

Before the start of 2026, Chwalinska had won only four tour-level main-draw matches and had never recorded back-to-back victories at that level. A breakthrough quarterfinal run in Cluj-Napoca and the WTA 125 title in Oeiras hinted at her progress, but few could have predicted a run to the Roland Garros final. She is now set to climb more than 80 places in the rankings and move close to the Top 20.

Chwalinska heads into the biggest match of her career with a strong 10-4 record in lower-level finals, including victories in each of her last five. Her most recent titles came at the WTA 125 events in Florianopolis, Montreux and Oeiras.

Andreeva Becomes One of Youngest Paris Finalists

Mirra Andreeva moved into the final after ending Marta Kostyuk's 17-match winning streak on clay and gaining revenge for her Madrid final defeat with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory. She saved four of the five break points she faced and converted five of her 13 opportunities.

With this run, Andreeva becomes the third-youngest Roland Garros finalist of the 21st century, behind Kim Clijsters in 2001 and Coco Gauff in 2022. She also leads the tour in total match wins this season and tops the list for clay-court victories.

The Russian has been highly impressive throughout the fortnight. Apart from dropping a set to Marina Bassols Ribera in the second round, she has not lost more than six games in any other match, including a commanding 6-0, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for Andreeva, who was in danger of dropping out of the Top 10 after failing to defend her titles in Dubai and Indian Wells earlier this season. Since the start of the clay swing, however, she has won 21 of her 24 matches and is now set to move close to her career-high ranking of No. 5.

This is the first Grand Slam final of Andreeva's career. She heads into the championship match with a 5-2 record in tour-level finals, including a 2-1 mark on clay.

Verdict

Maja Chwalinska’s run this week has been impressive, highlighted by consecutive wins over top-50 players. However, Mirra Andreeva has looked ruthless in recent matches, dropping just three games against the in-form Sorana Cirstea and four against Marta Kostyuk. Those performances underline her determination and current level, making her the favorite to lift the title this week.
