Muchova Fights Back To Reach Beijing Quarterfinals

Karolina Muchova defeated Naomi Osaka in a tight three-set battle to secure her place in the quarterfinals, winning 7-5, 1-6, 7-6. She trailed 1-3 in the deciding set before fighting back to complete the victory.

This is her second quarterfinal appearance here in Beijing. Two years ago, she faced Aryna Sabalenka at this stage and defeated her in straight sets to reach the final. She will now look to replicate that performance this week.

The Czech recently underwent minor wrist surgery after the Wimbledon final and skipped few events before returning at the US Open, where she reached the third round.

However, she has built impressive momentum here in China after winning both of her matches at the Billie Jean King Cup, followed by her quarterfinal run this week.

She has played six quarterfinals on tour this year and won all of them, including in Doha, Miami and Wimbledon. At WTA 1000 level, she has played eight quarterfinals and won her most recent five.

Bartunkova Continues Breakthrough Beijing Run

After eliminating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the third round, Nikola Bartunkova defeated Sinja Kraus in three sets to reach the quarterfinals, winning 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. She fired 10 aces and saved two of the three break points she faced during the match.

This is her maiden quarterfinal at WTA 1000 level. She had previously made only three main-draw appearances at this level, all coming this year, notably reaching the third round in Cincinnati and the fourth round in Rome.

She has improved significantly and showcased her level on tour by posting notable results, including three quarterfinal-or-better finishes, along with third-round appearances at Wimbledon, Toronto and the US Open.

These results helped her achieve a career-high ranking of No. 34 recently, and she is now one win away from making her top-30 debut in the rankings.
