Katarzyna Kawa is set to challenge former World No. 2 Paula Badosa in the opening round of the Hamburg WTA event. Despite Badosa's impressive clay performance and rise back into the top 100, recent fatigue and an injury-related retirement in Iasi open the door for Kawa, who is enjoying a solid clay season. Historically, Badosa leads their head-to-head, but Kawa’s current momentum and Badosa’s schedule may level the playing field. Upset potential runs high with Kawa eager for a strong campaign start.

Kawa Seeks Winning Start in Hamburg

Katarzyna Kawa suffered a disappointing defeat in Iasi last week, where she led by a set and 3-0 before losing to Panna Udvardy in three sets in the second round. She will now look to put that disappointment behind her and make a positive start this week.

The Pole failed to win a match during the first two months of the season, but has enjoyed a strong clay swing. She won the WTA 125 titles in Huzhou and Modena, reached the semifinals in Antalya, and made the quarterfinals in Bogota.

This will be her second appearance in Hamburg. On her debut in 2021, she suffered a first-round exit.

Badosa Eyes Strong Hamburg Debut

Paula Badosa reached the final in Iasi last week, where she retired while trailing Mayar Sherif by a set and 0-4. Despite missing out on the title, it was her first tour-level final since 2024.

It has still been an excellent run for the Spaniard, who won the WTA 125 title in Bastad a few weeks earlier before finishing runner-up in Iasi. Those performances have given her plenty of confidence and momentum as she looks to get her season back on track.

The recent results have lifted Badosa back inside the top 100. Before that, she had recorded multiple main-draw wins in only three tournaments during the first six months of the season, reaching the quarterfinals in Berlin, the third round in Charleston, and the semifinals of the Austin WTA 125.

This will be her Hamburg debut, and she will be looking to build on her recent momentum.

Verdict

Considering the long matches Paula Badosa has played in recent weeks and her retirement in the Iasi final, fatigue could be a concern. That gives Katarzyna Kawa a good opportunity to open her Hamburg campaign with a win this week.
