Encouraging Signs Emerging for Brit

With significant ranking points to defend in the coming weeks, Siegemund has extra motivation to build momentum here. Jones has the talent to challenge, but her fitness issues and recent form leave her facing an uphill battle.

Grass Season Offers Fresh Start

Laura Siegemund holds a 4–5 record against players outside the Top 50 this year.
She has failed to win a main-draw match in six of her last eight grass-court events.
Francesca Jones owns a 4–13 career record on grass.
She has a 2–8 career record against Top 50 players.

Queen's Debut Awaits Siegemund

Laura Siegemund saw her most recent campaign end in the opening round against Naomi Osaka in straight sets. It was her only first-round defeat on clay this season.

The German has played 10 tournaments so far this year and, apart from a third-round appearance in Rome, every other event ended without multiple main-draw wins. She has struggled to build momentum despite remaining competitive in several events.

This will be Siegemund's debut appearance at Queen's Club. She arrives with a solid 6-3 record in opening-round matches this season and will be hoping to make a positive start on grass.

Encouraging Signs Emerging for Brit

Francesca Jones began the season with a quarterfinal run in Auckland and, combined with her strong results from last year, climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 65 in February. However, recurring leg injuries have prevented her from building on that momentum.

The Brit has already retired from four matches this season and won only two matches between the Australian Open and the WTA 125 event in Oeiras in April. Encouragingly, her form has improved in recent weeks, with a semifinal run in Wiesbaden, a quarterfinal appearance at the WTA 125 event in Istanbul and a second-round showing at Roland Garros.

This will be Jones' second appearance at Queen's Club. She lost to McCartney Kessler in the opening round on her debut last year and will be hoping for a better result this time around.

Verdict

Laura Siegemund v Francesca Jones

Laura Siegemund has a significant number of Wimbledon points to defend, so a few good results would help ease some of that pressure. Francesca Jones is a talented player, but her fitness concerns and inconsistent form leave her as the underdog. Even so, she has the ability to make this a competitive clash and push Siegemund throughout the match.
