Madison Keys carries strong form and confidence into her Berlin WTA opening match against Xinyu Wang. Keys boasts a perfect 9-0 record in first-round matches this year and a 3-0 head-to-head advantage over Wang. While Keys has rebounded from early season struggles, Wang has not built on her strong start to the year and has recently suffered multiple early exits. With current momentum and historical success, Keys is the firm favorite, with a straight-sets win likely.

Keys Carries Encouraging Form Into Berlin

Madison Keys arrives in Berlin on the back of a productive clay-court season. She reached the semifinals in Charleston, finished runner-up at the WTA 125 event in Paris, made the third round in Rome and advanced to the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Those results represent a strong turnaround for the American, who dealt with fitness issues during the early part of the season. She also skipped the entire Middle East swing in order to focus on recovery and regaining full fitness.

Although she has already dropped outside the Top 20 after losing significant ranking points, the recent improvement in her results is an encouraging sign. Across all levels, Keys has played nine tournaments this year and has yet to suffer an opening-round defeat.

This will be her third appearance in Berlin. She reached the quarterfinals on her debut in 2021 but was unable to build on that result, losing in the opening round during her most recent appearance in 2025. With her confidence growing again, she will be aiming for a deeper run this week.

Wang Seeks End to Recent Struggles

Xinyu Wang made a strong start to the season, reaching the final in Auckland, the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarterfinals in Cluj-Napoca. Those results helped her establish herself among the higher-ranked players on tour during the opening months of the year.

Since then, however, her form has dipped considerably. She has failed to record multiple wins at any tournament since February and arrives this week having lost four of her last five matches. Despite that stretch, her ranking has remained relatively stable, leaving her only a few places below her career-high position.

This will be Wang's fifth main-draw appearance in Berlin. She won just one main-draw match across her first three visits before producing a breakthrough run to the final in her most recent appearance in 2025.

Verdict

Madison Keys has been performing at a much higher level than she was earlier in the season and arrives with strong momentum. Xinyu Wang, meanwhile, has struggled to replicate her early-season form and continues to battle inconsistency. Based on recent performances, Keys is favored to win this matchup, with a straight-sets victory a strong possibility.
